It's REALLY tough to get "connected" to your city or game when you feel like it could be lost at any moment.
And with this "cloud" gaming idiocy, what happens in a few years when EA decides to pull the plug on their SimCity servers?

"Sorry, you no longer have permission to play this game. Please purchase a new EA game. Thank you, and go cry a river in hell."

I guess the evil soul of Divx was never properly destroyed; the concept was left lurking, looking for another place to take up residence.

What's is the typical population of a city in 2013? If it can grow into a 100-200k city using the space, then I would imagine having a larger scale map with nothing but building and road spam would not make that much difference to me.

I saw someone with 450k

Most people that are doing it fast though are getting stuck at 250k.

They patch it so you can play offline.

Right, because they've done that with every other product for which they discontinued support.

You sure are gullible. I suppose that's why you believe the industry line about piracy too.

Now I'm stuck on the "Checking for updates" screen and can't select a server. I have been able to play about 2 hours total and had the game crash hard 3 times.

I was able to connect after a couple of minutes, and my city apparently had a natural disaster which destroyed my power plant while I was away. Bonus is I had a lot more money. I guess the city was running even while I wasn't logged in.

Anyway, I get everything back up and running, have 2 more natural disasters in 5 min of playtime, and then the screen went black.

And the servers are down again.

haha 15 minute queue so that I can log in and play by myself in my private region. Waiting in line for such menial things makes me feel like I'm at Disney World. Where is the fast pass distribution?

Seriously though, I can stomach a server side DRM check. I can't stomach relying on servers to do what my computer is perfectly able to do on its own.

I might be mistaken, but I thought parts of the game were actually server-side? And not just saves.

What video card is in the laptop?

I'm not sure what you expected them to do, if your vid card is too slow and you won't accept that fact.
I would expect the game to install. That is what I'd expect.
I don't need the all-knowing wiser-than-me EA to block an install.

Perhaps they're worried that they'll get a 1 star rating on Amazon from such installs

OK it's not multi-threaded. Does it matter though if the game runs smooth?
Perhaps the reason that the cities have such a small size limit can be attributed to it not being multi-threaded. If so then that would be a very significant consequence.

Doubtful. Even with MMOs the client machine does most of the heavy lifting. In this case who really knows. Server capacity is expensive and I'd be hard pressed to believe they are doing anymore than absolutely necessary. I'm pretty sure that virtually all of the in-game activities are processed clientside with server oversight. I could be wrong though.

Cloud gaming will become the future. I can't imagine it going anywhere else right now. Obviously there are some hick ups with the resources involved making it work, but rest assure, having the ability for a publisher to control the content you play will be a tremendous boost for them.

Maxis has already stated in interviews that a lot of the simulation is done on the cloud, and also mentioned that this is the main reason it had to be cloud based, because a pc wouldn't be able to process all of it.

I don't know how much of that I believe though, since those details came out around the time everyone was complaining it was online only, so to me it had a damage control feel to it, like Will Wright's interview where he basically outlined and defended the game's shortcomings.
