I get the little popup in game that says Simcity 5 servers are disconnected or whatever but I don't get kicked out of the game and keep playing.

Then a few minutes later it says connection restored!

"The SimCity servers are down. We cannot complete your request at this time. Please try again later."

Yeah, it's called EA servers deleted your progress. Happened to me and it went as far as I can't build a new city. That's how you enable all natural disasters.

Why are so many people saying "yay for DRM failing"?

Its an ONLINE GAME!! Its not single player. You build a city, which influences the region, and participates in the global (server) economy. The whole game is run on the servers. You just run a thin client on your machine.

This is not a DRM issue. Its an online game having too few servers issue. I don't see people whining that WoW or similar games have DRM.

Bahahaha take a poll. Pick whatever pool you want and ask "is the new simcity single player or multiplayer"

75% would respond, who cares it doesn't work
24% would respond, single player
The other 1% would be too busy eating mom's meatloaf to answer

I'd wager to say that if people wishing to play solo were allowed to do so completely offline, there would likely be no server issues whatsoever for the subfraction of players who wanted to play alongside others.

While true, it would require redesigning the whole game. When you play, the game engine is running on the servers, not your local machine.

And while I understand their reasoning behind this, its the main reason cities are so small, and why there is no true single player mode.

Which is all bullshit. They only put processing on the servers to protect their content. You're telling me that PCs in 2013 can't run this simulation? Bullshit.

No it is a different error.

Simcity servers are down. Attempting to reconnect.

It is within the game while I am playing!

What!?? B-b-but I thought the game didn't have any problems at all and people were just making stuff up? I thought it was the "smoothest release ever" ??

Most likely the game sends a "2+2" query and gets a "4" back from EA.

This is all true.

Right now while in the game even though the error "Simcity servers are down. Attempting to reconnect," is on I still can play the game fine.

Making lots of money and a lot of stuff going on.

It is the smoothest game release ever. Better than during steam sales. The game downloaded for me in 2 hours or less.

I got in before the rush.

Lol, just means that a hacked copy will be out sooner if it isn't already. Anyone that thinks that processing is actually done by EA is a fool.

Issues like this and Diablo III make me wonder how these companies determine their server demand. In a lot of cases, you can't really build your infrastructure for the initial demand as you'll just end up with underutilized servers within a week or two. This might push for implementing a hybrid permanent server + short-term cloud-based server solution. That way, you can easily pull down servers when the demand dies and it won't be as costly as attempting to reappropriate the hardware.

Although, it would certainly be much easier if EA didn't require their servers to perform the simulation processing.

That's my guess. Apparently, EA refused to issue refund requests even after stating that they would, but Amazon was allowing it. However, Amazon will usually pull items if there's an issue with the product or the description of the product. I mostly see the latter.

Perhaps if they had a more extensive public beta they could better prepare for this. But their beta was imo completely odd. Only allowed people to play for a couple days one hour at a time. They are getting what they deserve on this debacle.

I think the regional info is what is handled by the EA servers and would make the most sense to know what is getting effected in multiple cities. Your city runs on your PC completely otherwise.

Ehhhhhh.... no..

This is an example of "Hey, we can control all aspects of a product, lets do it!".

Speed is NOT something that you get from putting game logic on a server. In fact, the added latency almost certainly will kill any speed benefit you could possibly gain by having access to the server. On top of that, most people have decently beefy computers to run the game, so moving logic into the server makes little to no sense.

Moving game logic onto a server buys you three things: The ability to instantly update every client, the elimination of second hand sales, and the elimination (mostly) of piracy.

What it does not buy you is speed. especially when the computations are very complex and the number of clients is high.

Make no mistake, EA didn't do this to make a better gaming experience, they did this to try and shore up their bottom line.

Lol, everyone at the EA forums has picked up that there are tens if not hundreds of fake / shill users being paid to post for them.

Their forum is overrun with people trying to act like everything is perfect and there are no problems... With ridiculous usernames237498234 and everything.

I'm sure they're just limited to that forum.

I agree with you. There are ways to check and see how much data etc is passed back and forth, of course I've only been in the game a few hours so I can't really test anything.

The other thing you do is a paced release cycle. Clients would hate it, but it would give an overall better experience for everyone.

What do I mean by this? On the release day/week activate 1000 copies of the game every hour. Slow down the activation rate at non-peak hours and if your servers start getting overwhelmed. There could still be some overwhelming that goes on, but it would be more limited. Better to have some playing the game than none.
