think you're giving too much credit to maxis, they still made the game with ridiculous small city sizes which beyond the online only crap is one of the biggest fundamental problem with the game.

One of my complaints about SimCity 4, and the main reason I didn't play it nearly as much as I would have liked, is that it was a resource hog. I had a pretty decent computer for the day and playing the game on a city with 100k population made it chug like molasses. If I didn't move the screen around, the date would advance just fine, but scrolling around induced horrible lag. A lot of people complained about the same issue back then.

So you break the city up into small chunks and work on each one individually, I guess.

Of course, that's a bit of a stupid argument because we have multi core processors and gigs of ram now, which could much more easily handle those things.

I disliked 4 for the regions then, even though they weren't as mandatory as they made them for 5 so I really wasn't going to like 5.

But you have to remember the city sizes was not a design choice, its was a performance necessity. Over the summer they even worked to see if they could increase city sizes, and they said flat out with the current engine it is not feasible.

So there probably are some design flaws in the engine preventing it, but they claimed it would require a heavy overhaul to fix it.

We can only hope the next SimCity really takes the lessons they learned here and apply them.

And I would say it was a fatal performance necessity. They chose early on to try to simulate every citizen... and the proceed to think making a single core/single threaded game would be the best route. There had to be a point during the programming that somebody said "hey, let's see what happens when we make the biggest city possible!" They soon realized that Glassbox could only tolerate the small city sizes of the current game.

One of two events happened. First, somebody must have spoken up remarking how the engine doesn't scale well, and that went ignored. The bosses deemed the engine and city size "good enough." Or second, nobody complained from the designers since everybody bought into the idea the next game was SimTown/SimVille and not SimCity, and that consumers would be happy with the tiny city plots.

Either way, it comes down to bad decisions that severely harmed the end product. If they were going to design a game meant to simulate thousands of individuals, wouldn't the logical choice to make the game scalable and utilize the hardware resources that most modern desktops now have? Sadly they made a bad decision, and potentially fatally wounded another great gaming series.

But that's impossible!!!!! Can you even imagine the processing power your PC would need to make this work???? I'm sorry it's just not feasible. You would not believe how many servers we have running to process all the data for your cities to function.

Is the map bigger? That's what really killed it for me... that and I wasn't able to play it as much as I would have thought at launch. Oh and the really annoying once I got my multi cities working together suddenly lose everything cause they put in a patch.. fuck it, the game is dead to me.

I am blown away at the reviews on amazon. 1.5 stars out of 5 of over 3k reviews.

I'm actually surprised it's that high.

I bought this game at fully price, "played" it for a week and promptly asked for a refund which Amazon was quick to do. Origin says I still own the game but even still I haven't even bothered to reinstall and play this poor excuse of a reboot.

Offline mode? Meh.

It's only that high due to paid EA shills going around posting false reviews.

The forums were absolutely flooded with these people, both EA, here, and elsewhere.

We had people here claiming they played for 8 hours straight on days that every single server was confirmed down by EA... Just crowing at how fantastic and perfect the game is.

This was the final straw from EA for me. I have not and will not purchase anything else from them.

ditto, amazon refunded me as well a few days after. I also have not logged in since that either.

Yeah I got that email today too, considering trying it out as I am in a good mood to play a city builder.

Heh, I remember playing the game shortly after release when so many people were having problems, meanwhile I was literally not having the same issues (at least not nearly as bad as people were reporting). So don't just automatically assume they are lying.

These were periods when even EA had every single server down.

Also, there have been news stories from former EA shills who worked in office buildings full of "Online PR associates" whose job was to sway online opinions. IE shills.

It was a pile of crap when it came out. Most of the bad reviews are probably from the first few months. From what I hear it's not so bad now but I'm still wary of it.

I'm surprised reviews aren't at least a little time-weighted (eg: a 5-star review of the current game being valued more heavily than a 1-star review from over a year ago)

I had bought Sim City 4 a while ago and when I tried to play it, it was very sluggish. Maybe it had to do with the fact that I was using integrated graphics. Now that I have a decent graphics card, I am wondering if I should get the new Sim City. I don't care if its online only or able to be played offline. Just want the core Sim City gameplay.

I have not played a good PC game in a while (with the exception of Return To Castle Wolfenstein, which I play quite a bit). I remember playing Sim City 3000 and spending hours on it. Haven't had a recent game which I've done that on. Maybe that's a good thing, who knows

I haven't played the very latest patch with offline in it but I played the previous one and still had a tonne of simulation issues. So unless the latest patch as suddenly fixed all of that its still broken.

Well, get ready for more of it. Apparently they're going to turn cult classic Mirror's Edge into an MMO that requires always-online. Assuming it's true, I bet that will go over very well for EA.

I haven't played it since last summer but after the first few patches the game was pretty decent. I got around 50 hours out of it and thought it was "ok". Certainly lacking what I would expect out of a real simcity game but not anywhere near as bad of a disappointment that Civ 5 was at least.

What should amaze you is that it sold at least 3000 copies!

Everyone knew that there would be always online DRM at launch, and people still bought it. That is amazing if you ask me.
