I'm not defending this but there is a difference between a 15-30k car and a $60 game.
Also a car is required for work, sim city is not. A better comparison is a meal at a decent resteraunt arrives late & cold

the principal is the same. Cost and use is irrelevant.

My requirements for a car or SimCity for work are the same. I don't need either, but they are a nice to have. I'd be pissed if the car was not available for days after purchase and the same with this game. The cost has little to do with it something not being usable when delivered. Imagine if everything in life, whether a necessity or not, was not available to use at purchase. Here is your bus ticket, you can't ride today because we are not ready. Pay at the pump, but don't expect gas for a week.

This is just damn sad.

This was one of my favorite franchises and they've totally trashed it.

I still play SC 4 to this day, but it's apparent I won't be playing any other versions.

Saddest part of all is that they've made their money from it, just too many fools keep supporting this type of Company behavior.

The DRM trash pile keeps growing:

Valve games
Settlers series
ME series
Civilization series
Elderscrolls series
Simcity series
. . . and many others.

you: You were offering refunds according to your press release!!!!
you: In response to the launch day trouble Hatam said " If you regrettably feel that we left you down, you can of course request a refund for your order at http://help.origin.com/contact-us , though we are currently still in the process of resolving this issue. "
you: http://forum.ea.com/eaforum/posts/list/210/9330019.page#top
Interesting, it looks like that Origin post in that EA support thread got edited 2 times haha. He must have gotten some heat for mentioning refunds, and just changed it to:

Unless he mentioned it somewhere else in that thread (or the person chatting with support was lying), I can't find it though.

I agree. I remember when SC4 came out everyone was pissed because EA was the publisher and everyone expected it to be horrible, and in the beginning it had it's issues, but nothing like this.

I was on the fence originally because of the city size and the initial reports that it was watered down. I didn't like the always online requirement, but I play Diablo3 a ton, so I would be able to live with it.

But if the issues people are reporting since launch are any indication on how this game will perform, I won't even buy it for bargain bin prices. I'm fearing this will end up just like SCS did, abandoned. I hope for EA's sake they can can get a handle on the issues before everyone gives up playing.

I spent a good bit of time on the EA forums last night while my game wouldn't load and I really think a lot of the users are paid shills.

This should somehow be criminal... I had $60 stolen from me and got nothing in return.

I disagree with you about Civ 5. I think it was a good game, even if it wasn't what all players like. Haven't played the other two.

I hated it; it took what I like about Civ 4 (empire management) and completely eliminated or at the very least gutted it. The only thing they did well was the no more stack of doom thing from Civ 4. Civ 5 was also not challenging, it felt like a 1st graders version of the Civ series to prep them for harder versions down the road.

That's just sad.

I would've loved to see cities even larger than the "Large" sized plots in SC4.

That, plus always-on DRM BS = none of my $$$ for EA.

*shakes fist at Maxis, and at their EA overlords*

Wow what a pile of shit. That 'city' in SC2013 had like 8 streets in it....that's ridiculous.

Question for sim fans... I played sc2000 quite a bit, and basically skipped over sc3000 and sim city 4.

Are they a viable alternative to this mess? What about tropico?

I just miss that sim city 'feel' that I got from sc2000.

I'd recommend picking up SC 4 Deluxe edition and then go here:

http://www.simtropolis.com/

There are so many Mods, Patches, enhancements available that it's really amazing what the game has become.

I've got a few of the Tropico games, and while good in their own right, they're not quite the same as Simcity, they're more along the lines of a Settlers/Simcity cross.

there's the mass transit mod that allows bus stops to not take up space (like in a real city!) that makes a huge difference, at least for me

This sounds like an epic gong show.

I wanted to buy the game, but am now somewhat glad they delayed the OSX version. I'll probably wait for a sale.

I am not entirely opposed to the online nature of the game, but offline mode is a MUST. They botched the implementation and execution, and I am seriously considering depriving myself of a game I want to play just so they don't get my $60.

Yup, and at the very least download the NAM. It fixes a ton of network transit issues, and adds a ton of new pieces to the game. I don't know if it's hosted there anymore though, it might only be on www.sc4devotion.com, which is another very active modding site for SimCity4.

Graphics-wise, SC4 isn't the greatest, since it's 10 years old, but it's not horrible either, just look at the city journals at the simtropolis forum, here is a random set of screenshots I found in one of them just now (it's farmland not a city area, but there are plenty of journals with big central business districts also):

http://community.simtropolis.com/to...rchange-i-380-exit-2-a-b/page-25#entry1333932

Here is a suburb from the same journal:
http://community.simtropolis.com/to...rchange-i-380-exit-2-a-b/page-23#entry1300006

And I love overhead screenshots of regions, especially when they aren't all skycrapers and it looks realistic:

The pictures are usually heavilly filtered in photoshop as you can probably tell, but the graphics on the game (especially with updated buildings you can download) are still pretty decent.

So yeah, to me SimCity4 is still very playable.

I played this for another few hours last night and am really enjoying this game. I did see the server busy timer when I tried to switch to the "available" America West 2 server, which makes no sense, so I just went back to the Europe East 2 server I've been on.

I feel for those that aren't able to get in and I agree that it sucks it's so reliant on the cloud, but to me it's been a ton of fun so far once in the game. Only gameplay negative I've come across so far is that I can't assign one-way traffic to streets.

Compared to SC4, it's smaller and leaves some micromanaging features out, but it also adds features that make it a nice reboot, in my opinion. That and it doesn't crash on me like SC4 does; there have been so many occasions where I spend a lot of time building up a city in SC4 without remembering to save and having it crash to wipe out the entire thing that when I do play it, I'm hitting save after every little addition to the city.

Looks like I'll wait for this game when it goes on sale. Too many crazy shit going on right now -- EA being dicks, and the nerdrage of the community. The game looks fun, but not worth the current price of admission. I also like how there are no reviews from the top gaming sites yet.

I was about to post saying thats the most beautiful aerial shot of Simcity 4 ive ever seen, until I read it was photoshopped. Still the graphics are still good enough for today.

I'm thinking about buying this but not sure if my system can handle it, it's a couple years old, haven't kept up with tech as much as I used to. Opinions on how the game will run, if it can run?

Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz
4.00 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GSO
Running Vista

The game is literally unplayable for me. I have gotten, maybe, 3 hours of playtime since release. I have had my city 'rolled back' automatically losing all changes, and had it 'fast forward' with a bunch of random changes.

Your system will probably run it fine, but I would not buy anything until these major issues are worked out.

the reviews at Amazon are great, I highly recommend giving them a good read..

The hours upon hours since launch that I haven't been able to log in, whether it be sitting in queues, or server busy messages, or just plain old not working screens, I've managed to do a heap of things that I never do when I'm locked in my man cave playing video games.

I've washed the dishes, the laundry, changed the oil in the car, mopped the floors, dusted, did a spot of gardening, greeted my children who I hadn't really seen since Christmas, walked the dog, asked how my wife's day has been and listened to the entire response, restocked the groceries and many more things! My family has never been happier that they've got a father and husband again.

In fact, I feel like Simcity has given me a new lease on life. This wouldn't have been possible without the seemingly crazy decision to have constant online connections and server side save points even for single player.

So I can only thank EA and Maxis. Your failures have been my rewards. 5 stars!

The photoshops are just the filters though, what you see there is really in the game, it's just set with color filters and shades to set a mood/temperature. When I get home I'll post some of my regions, they aren't that different and they aren't shopped at all.

Basically what has made the difference is the ability to easily terraform regions into whatever you want and also all the building/transportation and flora mods. Beyond that it's just painting a picture for many. You just build it naturally (using high/medium/low density lots) and it starts to take shape on it's own.

I have PEGs seasonal trees in a few of my regions, and when the month changes the trees change color (and leaves fall off in winter). It kinda messes up the region view though because the time isn't synchronized across tiles. Still kinda neat though.

I'm the same actually. Not played any city builders since SC2000 when I was 14 or so. Got tropico 3 on sale a while ago and gave it a quick try, but wasn't totally sold. Not quite sure why, but I need to give it some more time.

All this simcity talk has made me want to pick up SC4 though. Been looking at mods and seems like there's tons of good stuff out there. The fact that you can build a (large!) fully functioning city, instead of a series of inter-operating villages make it much more appealing. That's what I love about original SC and 2k. If SC4 goes on sale I'm definitely getting it, even though I won't have time to play it

I saved this link with a bunch of SC4 stuff.
https://***********************/sc4modds/

Edit: wth? Why does it break the link? Because it's to sites.google.com?
ok, then do that and add /site/sc4modds. I'm sure you guys can figure it out..

edit2: Lol, I love this modd: "Ordinance: Legalize Medicinal Marijuana"

Thanks, wasn't sure how dated my system is, been out of the scene for a while. I've been looking forward to this game for so long it's such a disappointment that it's running into these problems. I'll probably work on my mayor skills in Sim City 4 until they fix everything.
