The expansion is a freaking joke. I mean the game is much better than when it was first released but there are so many things that still need tweaking and here they are releasing an expansion? wtf. The problem is people will buy it. ugh.

Surprised this hasn't been brought up today. Maxis says they're actively exploring the possibility of an offline mode

"Right now we have a team specifically focused on exploring the possibility of an offline mode. I can't make any promises on when we will have more information, but we know this is something that many of our players have been asking for. While the server connectivity issues are behind us, we would like to give our players the ability to play even if they choose not to connect. An offline mode would have the additional benefit of providing room to the modding community to experiment without interfering or breaking the multiplayer experience."

There is a difference between not buying it out of spite, and not buying it because you don't think you will enjoy it. It sounds like you're leaning on spite. I didn't buy it because I know I wouldn't like it and I am not missing out on it.

I got a decent amount of enjoyment out of SC5 but I'm certainly not going to buy a $30 DLC when there are still many many issues that need to be addressed.

The ostensible reason for always online was basically the region syncing calculations, right? Since that doesn't work anyway, I imagine it's easy to remove.

The server basically just handles cloud saves and allows different cities to communicate with each other. IIRC, hackers discovered shortly after the game's release that no processing is being done on the server end at all. Once they got into the code, they could make the game run happily offline. You just couldn't save. Seems the only barrier to an offline mode is building in local save functionality.

As for larger regions, they did mention why they made them small. Performance suffered too much once cities got too big. This was a problem with SC4 as well when it first came out.

Sim City 4 had one expansion.

Who thinks Sim City 5 will become like the Sims with 5 expansions a year? I sure hope not.

I did get hours of play, but there is not a lot of depth to the game. Unfortunately, not much more is exposed after a few hours in except the regional works which are pretty lame.

That's how I felt.. Once you got to a point where you started specializing in something that was pretty much it. It didn't have any place to grow or throw up issues like the older versions did. The regional stuff didn't really float my boat. I'd rather spend the time on one huge map than keep starting over and build up a city to connect to the other one I built.

Regional stuff was ok, but only if the cities were much larger. Half the fun in SC4 (for me) was getting an area set up and semi-specialized, and then expanding out, then developing highway/train infrastructure, then developing, then expanding...

I did actually *like* SC, but it's a shallow, quick experience, and I'm convinced the majority of that is due to map size.

I love EA's "Come back to SimCity, we added a lot of bug fixes!" E-mail they sent us this week.

It made me curious enough to come back and install the updates, only to be hit with advertising for more paid downloadable content and expansion packs once I finally logged in.

Wow, these guys are slimy.

LOL

This is EA we're talking about here.....

Don't know too many publishers giving stuff out for free. Their obviously trying to stick to a time table with deliverer's. Not sure whom to blame: upper managements focus, or the lack of execution on the developers part.

The mechanics of the game are still kind of broken. The cities of tomorrow is a mess, they are so buggy you just don't want to GP their yet at all. Honestly if game breaking bugs annoy you stay the hell away from this thing, it's frustrating beyond belief to loose city after city to bugs that are nearly a year old.

Looks like they're just getting started with DLC for it though. Easier to make, more profit. Takes an artist about 1 minute to create, sell for 2 to 10 dollars.

I love all the corporate ones that have actual company names with them :\

Is this game playable now? After watching some game play of it on youtube I have the itch to get it.

Thoughts on current condition of the game?

I just want bigger cities. They are so damned small it's laughable.
That and the whole idea of a "zone" or whatever -- where different cities/players share resources etc to help eachother out just doesn't pan out. I guess it could if you had friends that you were playing with, but with strangers, never.

It's a shame. I love Sim City and have bought and played every one from the SNES through to SC4. I really want this game, but just can't get it in its current state. I don't want it to ruin my impressions of the entire series. I guess I'll just have to skip it

Sad. The previews looked great.
