I've used both cameras extensively. My opinion is that the DC3400 is a better overall camera when it comes to the part that counts most-picture quality. It beats the DC4800 on indoor pictures in most cases, and I give it a slight edge on outdoor pictures. The difference in resolution really isn't that big a deal in most cases. I guess if you need the absolute best resolution possible, you might be better off going with the DC4800, but in many cases I don't think you will notice much difference. You might want to head over to the Kodak website-they have sample pics taken with both camera-and judge for yourself. The DC4800 gives you more control over aperature setting and color balance setting than the DC3400, but if you usually point and shoot, that doesn't matter much either. Also, a minor point, but one that bugs me is that the DC4800 has a "pop-up" flash. If in the "down" position, you must remember to pop it up before you can take a flash picture. The DC3400 flash is always ready, a much better arrangement in my opinion. I bought the DC4800 when it was available for under $400 a few months ago, but knowing what I know now, I sure wouldn't pay $300 more for it than you can get the DC3400 for. That is my 2 cents worth.
