simple netwoking question

I have an office set up with the laptops and they work pretty well. I wanted the hard wired setup for on room for redundancy if I have wireless problems. I am an MD and this is patient charting , so very important I keep running. I am rural so I need to be able to do this stuff myself, since tech support is far away.
The wireless stuff is all incrypted, firewall, etc.

I have them wire the net work and plug into the router. Port 1 is the DSL, light is on and works perfectly.
On the other port is the cable but no light on the router so it is not getting the signal. I have the client computer when hooked up does not see the network. The wizard did nott show a network.
I believe this is a very easy problem that I am just not getting. Please help.

It has to be a process of elimination.

From what you describe it seems that the cable is No good.

Get a short commercially manufactured cable put the computer close to the Router and try again

If it works, your installed long cable is ?Sick?.

If it does not work put temporarily another computer via the short cable into the Router to make sure that the Router is OK.

If the works then the computer thta uses the wire is the culprit.

If it does not work you might need a new Router.

LOL. By now you probably happy that medicine is simpler.
