Simple program to tell me the current transfer speed of my wireless?

i'm going to xfer files from laptop to desktop (40gigs) via my roommates wireless network.

is there a simple program that will tell me how fast i'm xferring stuff?

Assuming you have Windows NT/2000/XP as the OS...
1.Open the Task Manager, in the Networking tab it will show you the network utilization.
2.The wireless program that comes w/ your wireless card may have something that shows you the stats.

no, my wireless card (belkin usb) just tells me how many bytes are xferred, but not rate.

Edit:

now task manager sees my usb adapter as 11mbps. if it says 10%, does that mean 1.1mbps (~140kbytes/sec)?

The 10% usuage is for control packets and packets for bulk transfers. This is how usb works, of the 12 MBits/sec available 10% is used by the usb controller and the 90% remaining for data hence 11Mbits/sec speed.


Open task manager and choose:
Networking Tab - View Menu - Select Columns - Tick Bytes Sent/Interval and Bytes Recieved/Interval.


If that isnt good enough for you then get Bandwidth Monitor Pro.

I might miss some big scientific innovation.

But how about transferring 10MB measure the time that it takes and multiply the time by
x4000.

I.e. if it took 5 sec. to transfer the 10MB it would take 20,000 sec. to transfer 40GB.

20,000 / 3600 is about 6 Hours.

bytes sent/received.. is that per second?

per interval - and you can control the interval - but yeah, it's roughly 1Hz at normal interval.

how do i control the interval? and what do you mean 1hz? how does that translate to kb/sec?

Found the answer:
update speed has three settings: High (twice per second), Normal (once every two seconds), Low (once every four seconds)

So if on normal, just divide by 2 to get per sec xfer rate
