PNY customer support told me Lexar CF can only be read in their card readers, not eg, in my PNY card reader. Yeah, I can hook up the camera to teh pc and read it that way, but I don't like that.

So I stay away from lexar now. Is simpletech read universally in all card readers?

I don't know what PNY customer support is talking about because that is not my experience (BTW, PNY customer support is an oxymoron). I have several Lexar compact flash cards and they all read fine through the three different card readers I own.

What they may be referring to is Lexar's "Jump Shot Cable" which is a hybrid miniature USB card reader that requires Lexar compact flash cards that are "USB enabled". However, any Lexar CF card should be compatible with any standard CF card reader, even PNY's unless they have some type of proprietary circuitry embedded within the reader.

yes i forgot, the lexar card I have is USB enabled. I've never had any problem with PNY or the card reader until this latest CF I got free with a camera a few weeks ago. The lexar USB enabled card was invisible in Win. Well, I ordered the simpletech from amazon, so I hope it will work in my card reader.

I understand that 12x is pretty slow these days
Not at all. In fact, 12X rated is better than average. But take all the marketing "X-speed" with a grain of salt. I believe it was Lexar who first started to tout their CF as 4X, 12X, etc. When pinned down as to what it meant, they used CD-ROM speeds as their benchmark. There is an excellent review at www.dpreview.com (Link) on "digital film" if you want to research it further.

Before paying a extra $$ for premium CF, you need to consider what type of speed do you really need which is dependant upon the application. Due to the expense and slow speed (even the fast stuff), CF is not a suitable media for massive backups or maintaining large data files. Rather it is a media of convenience where size, weight and portability are important. Also, the bottleneck in CF is the write process, not reading.

The only app that I can think of that would benefit to any degree from fast CF (24X or better) would be in professional grade digital cameras which are designed to shoot/process images continuously without pausing, but even these cameras generally have some fairly hefty onboard memory cache's to minimize any wait time while writing files to CF. None of your typical consumer or even "pro-sumer" cameras can process images fast enough for the speed of the CF media to be an issue.
