My beef with Family Guy is the same beef I have with South Park (though I personally think FG is a better show than SP). I think both shows rely excessively on shock value for their humor, and I regard this as a crutch. I am not easily offended (I'm a fanatical Howard Stern fan), and I have never taken umbrage at anything I've seen on either show; I just think they rely on profanity and shock in lieu of real wit and creativity. Ultimately I find them both a little dull as a result.
The Simpsons does have a constant slapstick humor, but it also has amazing depth, richness, and cultural literacy. I find it vastly more satisfying and interesting than FG, and nothing I've seen over the past few years convinces me otherwise. Even a mediocre Simpsons episode pleases me more than a "great" FG show. Obviously everyone has a different standard.
Perhaps I'm biased in that I have been watching the Simpsons since the very first Christmas special, before the series even started (though I didn't regularly watch the Tracey Ullman show, where they originated in prototype form), but I have watched, and been disappointed with a lot of cartoon series since that have tried, and failed, to capitalize on the Simpsons' success (including The Critic, Futurama, Family Guy, American Dad, and so on). To me it is still the best by a large margin.
