EDIT: 3 month update - 06-28-2012 - Down 37lbs!

Just hit my initial bottom goal weight of 215lbs as of today! Super excited to make this milestone but realize how much excess weight I really have been carrying all these years as I fully intend to keep going until the flab is gone.

I just this morning did a 3 month follow up at the doctors for some more blood work. 3 months ago the blood work pointed to higher than should be cholesterol and sugar levels and my doctor was a bit concerned that if something wasn't done I would be heading towards heart issues and possible diabetes.

This caused me and my wife to go full steam ahead with some lifestyle change we had already started working towards in the prior weeks and for the past 3 months we've been on a new way of living.

We eat much healthier than we were for the past 8 or so years plus we work at 3 times a week. The only time I missed exercising just once in the past 3 months is when I had strep throat and I was at my worst feeling. Besides that one exception I have not skipped or cheated myself at all and plan to keep it that way.

People keep asking my wife and I how long we're going to do this "diet" for and when we explain, this isn't a diet, this is a lifestyle change and it's from the point we started it and going forward.

Who would of thought? Eat healthier and exercise regularly and the weight comes off on its own.

No gimmicks, not pills, no gadgets, nothing that can be packaged and sold on late night TV infomercials.

My doctor was impressed with the big visable change. Will take a few days to get the blood work results though.

I just wanted to share my progress and hopefully help motivate others.

If I can do this much in this little time, anyone can do it!

Original post: 03-24-2012

Starting March 24th I weighed 252.2lbs.

I'm 32 years old and 6'3" tall FWIW.

Was the fattest I've ever been in my life and I became disgusted with myself.

My wife and I were both at the point of being tired of being so sloppy with our eating/diet and lack of exercise.

Every dinner consisted of to large of portions and very carb heavy.

Pizza, breaded chicken patties on buns, mac and cheese, etc. Just horrible food choices that we blindly consumed with little thought for basically as long as our almost 3 year old son was born.

We both showed the poor choices in our weight gain.

So I did research as I always do when I want to find out more about how to do something before just blindly jumping in.

The obvious was eat less and eat better especially for dinner. Also cutting out sugars.

I came across diets like Paleo and Keto and while they seemed popular there was a few elements to them lacking. For one my wife is hypoglycemic and as a result she can't do any diet that restricts all carbs or she gets to the point of passing out.

The real focus though for us is to avoid carbs and all sugars as much as possible and eat less.

We're not going Atkins levels of crazy with it, we still avoid fatty and unhealty foods.

We eat a lot of chicken, fish and use ground turkey always instead of any beef.

Every meal we have veggies as well now.

We'd have a can of soda with dinner every night before, not its usually just water and sometimes something like Crystal Light.

I tend to go out to lunch while working often and before I would drink a few glasses of soda with lunch on a regular basis.

We'd even have dessert on a regular basis.

No exercise and I work a job where I sit behind a computer all day.

Now I don't like sugar pass my lips and avoid all large carbs like breads and pasta.

Since March 24th we've begun exercising 3 days a week on our elliptical as well.

It's amazing that in just 21 days I've been able to lose 18lbs and it just keeps coming off.

One thing that's been very helpful is my wife and I really help keep each other on course. If she wants to give in for just one meal or day I encourage her to stick with the plan and she does the same for me. We both motivate the other to exercise when it'd be so much easier to sit on the couch and watch TV after working all day and taking care of our son in the evenings.

My target weight is 215lbs so I still have a good ways to go but at this rate I should hopefully accomplish it within 3 months from my starting point.

I'm starting to think a bit ahead and wondering about adding in some weights of sorts. Ideally something that will be the most beneficial while taking up the least amount of space in my house and not costing a ton of money as well.

If anybody has any suggestions on weights or some other solution that fits my wants, I'm all ears.

Just wanted to share my story I guess. No other real point to this post...

nice work! yeah, ketogenic diets are extremely effective. I tend to do them every February before cycling season starts to knock off my winter weight. I usually drop about 20lbs in that period. I don't think it's a healthy long term diet, but to loose weight fast is very easy. funny how those cravings for carbs and sweets go away after about a week.
make sure to get fat and plenty of fiber/veggies in the mix. I enjoyed having an avocado every day or two. keep up the good work!

Thanks for the uplifting story! I suggest looking into a set of kettlebells. I have been using them in the intense program I started five weeks ago and there are a lot of exercises you can do with them. Started out using 15-20 lb ones but now I am up to 50lbs for a lot of the exercises.

Also, you might try eating a lot of small meals. Its tough, but eating 5-6 smaller meals a day will increase metabolism and help you lose even more. I have lost nearly 25 lbs in the five weeks I have been doing this fitness/diet routine. I am like you and drive a desk everyday. BTW, I'm 5'10 and started at 274lbs, now I am just under 250lbs. I have 4 more weeks to go and I hope to be at my goal of 220 by then.

Don't just start nerfing your carbohydrates. You still need them. Just start measuring your food and track what you're eating with an online app.

Why is it that you need carbohydrates? Unless you're an athlete that is constantly depleting your glycogen stores, you can get along fine without carbohydrates.

Good job. Fwiw I don't think you should be afrid of fat--just afraid of saturated and trans. Eat avocados

I also hit a personal fat record and a month back today decided enough of this shit. I have also cut back all the added sugars and junk and cut back on empty junk carbs like bread. I am pretty heavy into veggies and fruit and not shying away from fat too much. Weight down decently so far.

Because carbs are energy and you burn glycogen over the course of your day to day routine.

Carbs provide fibre and valuable nutrition and are invaluable to a proper diet.

I can agree that carbs provide fiber and important nutrients. Well, at least fruits and vegetables do, grains (even whole grains) are pretty much devoid of nutrition, however. The average American that sits in an office for 8 hours/day and spends 3 hours/day watching TV burns very little glycogen, however. He or she probably doesn't need more than 100 grams of carbohydrates a day and can rely on fatty acid oxidation for all his or her energy needs.

I've actually wondered about these before. I've heard of them on and off over the years and find a nice set on Amazon for $88 shipped that I could use some giftcards on.

Any good videos, books or sites out there to learn more about them and exercises?

Congrats. I've been trying the same thing. This one sentence from your OP made me take notice.

People keep asking my wife and I how long we're going to do this "diet" for and when we explain, this isn't a diet, this is a lifestyle change and it's from the point we started it and going forward.

I get this also.

I've had (mostly in shape people) ask me how long am I going to kill myself. One jackass even asked if I was sick or taking drugs. He keeps telling people I am on a crack (as in smoking crack) diet.
