Now that most companies are either laying off or just NOT hiring new employees, has anyone currently employed felt an up-tick in pressure and B.S. from their current bosses? Almost as if they know that they've got most of us by the balls?

I sure have. All across my workplace, unreasonable demands are being dished out by our arrogant managers. They purposefully pull stunts that causes all the employees to over-exert themselves, resulting in a powder keg environment, simply because they know that they have us by the balls at this current point in time.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

In my field, HR = corporate. They're not REALLY out for the interest of the worker bees, and no unions are involved.

Nope. I'm a systems admin for a bank holding company (11 charters and 40+ locations). The chain of command goes directly from me, to my boss, and then to the CEO. My boss oversees another department as well and leaves me be. I've been basically running the department since my first day. We constantly have more and more projects going on and fewer people to help (due to layoffs). The layoffs, as it turns out, have actually made my position just that more secure and buuusssy.

Suck it up.

That's a part of life, and life is not fair.

Just wait til the economy is good, get yourself a nice new job, then you can tell them "kthxbye".

Leverage is everything, if you don't have any right now, and not many employees do in this economy, then stay quiet. If you think you are a superstar and they can't do without you, then say something. It is that easy. All depends on the amount of leverage you have.

It all depends on how one approaches his/her HR dept.; go in there "whining," and not much will change; go in w/ a "plan" and you'd be surprised IMO.

hiring freeze in my department has everyone else a little on edge (except the one guy who's management's golden boy and gets to sit in his cubicle only working on stuff he wants to work on all day).

we would have been fine with the freeze except we lost 3 people (1 person quit, 2 people got themselves fired) and couldn't/didn't hire anyone to replace them. in order to maintain shift coverage, management forced us onto a 12-hour/day schedule -- except that our manager kinda sucks and has no clue what the department needs are because he's new and refuses to listen to anyone else. he insisted on the exact same coverage for every shift, every day of the week, even though it's noticably busier on some days than others... saturdays and sundays? we could easily get by with 2 people on shift. but fridays? we could have 5 and it would still be tight.

as a result, pretty much everyone is overworked, unhappy (because the 12-hour scheduled screwed over pretty much everyone* and said new boss did a complete 180 on the flex time policy in the department), and actively looking for new jobs, except the aforementioned golden boy who, as far as I can tell, has been tasked with spending his entire day designing unneeded web applications that do nothing but make every aspect of our job longer and more tedious.

*as much as I qq myself, the worst casualty is probably this one religious guy... he has a church thing every wednesday at 6 pm. management refused to make any concessions for him like letting him come in/leave early on wednesdays, so he was forced to go from working 9-5 to an overnight schedule.

no, but I have noticed employer standards go to ridiculous levels. proficient in this this and this, 5 years experience, oh and we're going to give you a whole $1.50 above minimum wage! I know it is always like that but now it seems everywhere I look.
