Online multiplayer gaming is awesome. One advantage is unlimited replay value and custom content. Some FPS games can even become online athletic-like cybersports. There's also a social aspect to it; communities of enthusiasts form on discussion forums and IRC, and there are even clans and competitive leagues.

For RTS and FPS it's the only way to play because AI is normally retarded. AI in RTS is incapable of any sort of strategy or real challenge.

Online multiplayer is also about stroking your E-penis. It feels good when you kick someone's ass.

Multiplayer by far. I had to pry myself away from BC2 to go play Batman so I can get through my huge backlog. I just started it a couple of days ago and haven't gone back, maybe I will today.

But maybe the problem is that new games are lame, and I can't bring together the interest to go play them. I played through Metroid Prime a couple weeks ago and I was addicted to it. I even replayed Ocarina of Time a few months ago and that was fantastic, difficult to put down even though I've already played through it (even if it was about 10 years ago).

A lot of new multiplayer games are lame too, but all it takes is ONE good one to get addicted to and play for months. When the Dawn of War 2 expansion comes out next year it will probably be the only game I play for a while (the multiplayer, that is).

A very good single player game won't last very long unless its full of filler.

Consolization has taken a toll on FPS online multiplayer. Arena-style cybersport FPS is pretty dead now. The original Unreal Tournament (1999) was never given a true sequel, partially because of the influence of the consoles.

I still like SP the best...

Playing capture the flag, seeing who can get the most kills, gets old after a while for me...

I guess I like the PROGRESSION of SP better and some story to go along with it...

Single player mostly for me. I have only a handful of games that made me go to multiplayer.

TBH I don't get how playing Counter strike on and on can be appealing to some. I need a story line to gain some interest in the game

A good FPS can become less of a game and more of a sport. If you can get involved with the clan community and end up playing more serious, organized games, it can get very interesting. The games don't even have to be clan matches; they could be spontaneously organized pick-up games set up in IRC. Consequently, people are still greedily playing 5v5 capture-the-flag UT99 PUG matches to this day even though the original Unreal Tournament is 11 years old now.

Multiplayer. I don't dislike single player games (in fact some are very good) but I'm always more excited about a good MP game than a SP one.

The multiplayer games I play get way more playtime than the single player games, but I play lots more single player games. In the end it might work out to about even I guess.

I prefer single-player. Sometimes when you are ready to play multi-player you have to wait 2 hours while the site downloads all the maps that you need to play it.

I get frustrated at MP because there's always a bunch of basement dwelling virgins who play 24/7 and are rude and nasty towards everyone else. It takes just one bad apple to turn me off to something, so I stick with SP usually.
This

Bought SC2 and beat it in a week, haven't touched it since. Thats the way it usually goes. I only play MP if playing with people I know (rare)

Single player, definitely.

With the exception of a L4D/L4D2.

When I game, I mostly want to get away from people.

Single player mostly now. Use to be heavy into multiplayer - MOH, COD and TF2 most recently but it gets me too anxious nowadays lol. I find I like to kick back, relax and enjoy SP much more now with a good story and replayable gameplay.

Are people who only play single player against inferior AI when online multiplayer is available "single player sissies"?

I think of people who play the excellent RTS game Sins of a Solar Empire offline as "single player sissies" because an AI's strategic ability will never compare to what a human can do. It's as though they aren't even playing the real game and are only scratching the surface of the game's strategic elements and depth.

I do more multiplayer gaming, because sharing the experience with other people (coop or pvp) just makes things more fun. I enjoy a good single player game, and can spend hours playing some of the more in-depth or replayable games, but multiplayer is where it's at, for pretty much any genre.

However, doom and half-life are still talked about and played by who knows how many people and they were designed around a single player game.

I don't know...unless they're speaking of them nostalgicly, like people do with older Elder Scroll games, the only thing I ever hear about them is "When's the next one coming out?"

unless if its mass effect or similar rpg, multiplayer all the way. no point in playing single player unless if it was for a campagn/storyline or something, and then i'd only play through it once. playing SC2 single player would get boring real quick.

I definitely like single-player games, but I tend to have 1 or 2 multiplayer games on which I focus my attention. I've probably gotten a thousand hours of playtime out of Call of Duty 4.

To me that sort of FPS sub-genre didn't so much die out due to consoles, but as a product of evolution. Sort of like how Company of Heroes/World in Conflict pushed the RTS envelope, I feel that newer games like TF2 are redefining competitive online play.

Thats how I see it too.
As dude already pointed out Unreal Tournament arrived in 1999! Do we really need to play the exact same thing constantly for 12 years? Its time to move on to bigger and better things, and I dont mean new iterations of Unreal Tournament that are basically the same game with better graphics. I mean entirely new games.
I admit I still play Baldurs Gate 2 once in a while, but thats maybe once a year at the most. I dont see the point in constantly playing something like that. Not that theres been anything better in the years since.

We need to ignore all the crappy UT ripoffs until the industry gets a clue and makes something genuinely different. If guys keep buying shitty titles by the millions there will never be financial incentive to move on.

Single Player. About 7 years ago I lost interest in being tea-bagged and called a noob 90% of my MP time.

Except for a certain racing game that I play online, I prefer SP. Not a fan of MMORPG, RTS-es seem to amount to clickfests, and while FPS MP can be fun, I never got into it.

Generally single player as long as the story is decent, but there are a few MP games that I really enjoy and I like the fact I can log in for a few minutes and play without having to be invested for a long period. One of the main reasons I dislike MMOs is it seems like it takes hours to do absolutely anything once you get past level 10 or so.

Single player almost exclusively. I guess that's because I dislike most people.
