If you're working in an office all the time, though, you might as well stick to Pandora on your smart phone.

It's the ONLY way I can find 10 hours of driving bearable.

Agree also!

Anyone know what bitrate the songs are? While reception is usually great, the quality, to me at least, is not. 64kbps?

Ditto...I was thinking no more than 96...sounds horrid compared to MP3/WMA discs....which is why I chose not to renew it.

I have xm and love it. Sure sometimes it seems like it might be a waste every now and then when money is tight, but all I need to do is turn on regular radio and I realize just how much it's worth it.

Worth every penny, even for the two channels I listen to exclusively (Howard 100 and 101).

I should mention that the Sirius iPhone app is useless for car trips in the country, though... it just won't work correctly unless you're in a 3G coverage zone.

I had it for about 6 months. I couldn't stand the 96-112kbps sound quality. I now use pandora on my blackberry and couldn't be happier.

I love Sirius. They play a great selection of music, comedy, sports. Like others in this thread, I have a really long drive so it's nice to have such a diverse choice of channels.

Got it for Stern when he first came over to serious. Had it for a couple of years and got tired of Stern (actually got tired of Richard and Sal and Artie the Junkie) let subscription expire. The music was good but here in Boston we have Channels that are just as good if not better for my taste in music. It just wasn't worth the money for me and that was at the old rate.

 Howard Stern rules!!!

It is also fun having dozens of channels of music to listen to and no commercials or idiot DJs.

At work, I listen to Pandora for free on my blackberry storm. Why would I want to switch to Sirius and pay monthly?

People said the same thing about cable/satellite when it was first released.

This man speaks the truth. Thought about cancelling a few weeks ago, but then I tried to give local radio a try...SIRIUS is no CD-quality provider, but it sure beats the socks off of local radio in terms of sound quality. Plus the variety is great since you can tune to your mood.

Unless you listen to the 60's channel where they try to duplicate 60's radio "sound" minus the commercials. Idiot DJ's abound and lately it's morphed into the "Motown channel". Last but not least is the horrid bitrate, the flanging artifacts from that and the compression make me turn on the CD player half the time anyway. My subscription runs out in a month and I'm not renewing it..

Sirius XM subscribers question rate hike

NAB SmartBrief | 07/27/2009

Some Sirius XM Satellite Radio subscribers are crying foul over a 15% rate hike in their basic $12.95 monthly fee. The satcaster claims the increase is allowed under the FCC's 2008 approval of its merger, which capped its fees for three years, except under certain circumstances. The FCC allows the satcaster to raise rates in the event of a royalty hike, but this article notes that the 15% subscription hike exceeds the 8.3% rise in royalty rates. Well, I picked it up. It's the Sportster 5. It includes a vehicle kit as well. I'm going to install it in my Honda CRV this weekend.

I was looking at accessories for it though, hoping I'd find some portable speaker system I could take to work. This is the smallest one I saw at Best Buy (actually the only one). It seems a bit big to take to work, so I might just keep it in the car and buy the speakers to keep around the house. I suppose I could take the speakers with me when I go camping.

So which subscription plan should I get. I was thinking about getting the $12.95/month plan. I just want the music channels, Stern, and NFL football. Maybe some talk radio also.

Not worth it. Just hook your Blackberry to your car stereo if you have an input. I used mine for 200 miles of a 300 mile road trip. It blipped out 3 times for 45 seconds each time. This was on Sprint using a BB Tour.

They still don't have any music I like on subscription radio. Even if they had a little bit of what I like (unlikely), I'd still be better off just playing my own CD's and MP3 player, because then I get to listen to ONLY what I like. NPR is on sometimes, but most of the time, I just have my own music playing.

So I think I'm going to take my car into Best Buy later tonight to have my sirius radio professionally installed. The Best Buy website says is costs $79.99 and usually takes a few hours.
