Now about the first wave of motherboards with the sis 648 chipset.

Shuttle AS45GTR is off course a motherboard with all the features
we expect to see, but has a hard time with ddr memory @400 mhz and
scores lower than SiS 648 Reference board.

ABIT SR7-8X I think is overall a bad motherboard with none of the features we wait
to see from a sis 648 chipset.

Finally we have the ASUS P4S8X! And I think this is the best performing
motherboard for now. But... lacks raid controller...

We want USB 2.0/RAID/AGP 8x/SATA/agp-pci locking and a normal price!!! It's so difficult???

Let's wait and see what MSI, GIGABYTE and SOLTEK can do about that...

I e-mailed Asus tech support a few days ago regarding the availability of the P4S8x to the general public. I just received the following response:

Dear User,
Thanks for choosing ASUSTeK.
Sorry,we can not sure the exact release date.According to the plan,P4S8X will be released in this last ten-day of this month.

Just for clarification, I received this e-mail on Sunday evening in the US, which places it Monday morning Taiwan time. Unfortunately, this means it was written in August which implies that the mobo will be released in the last 10 days of August. I'm giving up and getting an Abit IT7 MAX.

FYI, I also sent e-mails to other manufacturers regarding release dates of their respective 648 boards. I post to this thread if/when they respond.

It seems the chipset is limited FSB wise, but I guess its fine for P4 A users, as they don't really need any more than 150 FSB. But for Northwoods I think you'll be better off sticking to the good ol' IT7

What are you talking about...I have a p4 1.6a and it is running 171fsb.....I need to know is this board going to be flaky above 140fsb like the p4s333 or 150fsb like the p4s533 mobos??? Also sis has some weird memory latency issues on the p4s333 mobo....I had no stability issues with the sis chipsets just feel like I don't get the best perfomance with them or they are not the best for extreme ocing...

My ide and agp scores are lower when running sis chipsets versus just i845d....

I think waiting for the dual channel ddr board buy intel will be a better option....

Exactly.......................the 648 boards do not have "official" DDR-400 support and that is why many people now are thinking this is the reason for the sudden, unexpected release of the 648DX which HAS "Official" DDR-400 support.................. A lot of people are now thinking the 648 boards may well be passed over basicly with 648DX boards showing up quickly.

Not a "bad" idea................I mean may has well get all the mileage you can out of the current board and ram you have since you'll have to replace all of it if you want DDR II! The only concern yet is that DDR II as it concerns system ram modules still has horrible latency problems and will have to be 10% - 20% faster to acheive the same speed has present DDR according to reports on DigiTimes, X-Bit and many others.............the latency problems essentially make DDR II worse in that department than RDRAM which is not a good thing with higher frequency chips all the time.........

I was lucky to have gotten my sr7-8x mobo from newegg. I used a Corsair CMX512-3200 ram chip, which is a 512 Meg DDR400 chip running at 2.5-3-3. I was able to get this motherboard to work at the 4-6-2-1 ratio without any problems. BUT, when I tried to run this ram at DDR333 mode at 2-2-2, I got a blue screen after rebooting, and got a message saying a system file was missing. I had to clear the CMOS and start over. Now that I have left the memory settings to DDR400 and 2.5-3-3, the system is rock solid. I have not tried to overclock the CPU yet, but I am afraid know that I might get blue screens.

This board is okay for users that do not plan on overclocking your CPU and memory.

Personally, I am probably going to return this board and either wait for the Asus board or the boards that are going to come out with the SIS648DX chipset, which will have official DDR-400 support.
