Evan, Thanks! I think I'll cancel my GA-8INXP(it seems alot of ppl are selling their newly purchased GA-8INXP's) order and wait for the SiS 655. I have 2 sticks of Corsair XMS 3200(2 x 512 Mb) just waiting to live out its' potential! Any compatibility issues with the 9700 Pro? Is SiS and ATI getting along better now? Thanks bro, we all appreciate your input. I have a MSI 845 G Max L now... it will soon(I hope) be the wifes' computer...

How cheap are we talking about (can you give us ballpark figures?)?

Depending on demand, $145-$175.

Okay, so here's my situation. I have to buy a new motherboard because I have my old 1.6A sitting around and I want to build a computer for my dad (who's still stuck on a P3 500). So I might as well buy myself a motherboard and give my current BD7-II to my dad. My current CPU is a 2.53 @ 3.1GHz (163MHz FSB). I have 2x 512MB Corsair XMS3200 (the first stuff that came out way back when, not the C2 stuff). Together these can run at like 420MHz DDR with SPD timings (can run higher individually). So 163MHz FSB with 3:4 is out.

So what do you think is a better deal? An Albatron 845PE board for $85 and 163MHz FSB with 4:5 ratio of single channel available now, or possibly almost double the cost for 163MHz FSB with 4:5 ratio of dual channel which might not even be available this month? Also, I don't use any of the onboard stuff.

It depends on what you do with your computer. However, you probably won't notice the difference if you're a gamer/internet kind of user.

I've been waiting so long now it doesn't matter! I think I'll bypass the GB offerings...after all it's a server mobo to begin with...and it seems obvious that those who purchased it weren't so happy with it...I'll give SiS a chance I think. Someone brought up a good question concerning the GB mobo..."why hasn't Intel offered their own GB mobo?" Hmmmm...I wonder why too? I might have been born at night, but it wasn't last night! Yeah, I can wait for SiS 655...

Yes, assuming you don't want to waste any extra money you have and aren't going to be upgrading for at least another 6 months anyway.

Evan....
Take a break....you've been working too hard it seems...(where the hell is the Gigabyte review!!!)You know I'm only kidding! Glad to see you're still alive and kicking! I'm turning blue holding my breath waiting for your Gigabyte review...Only kidding( BTW, Half of all kidding is true...I guess the secret is in deciding which half is which!) If your taking a break...scroll back a bit and check out my question about SiS and ATI...any problems with this combo so far? I can hook you up with one(9700 pro) if you need...kidding "for real"(I'll take the guess work out of it for ya!) LOL! Thanks!

AFAIK, there are no issues with AGP8X-compatible SiS boards and 9700 Pro video cards ArborBarber.

Well, I've got a P4 2.26 to sell, so if 655 looks promising (which it seems like it is from what Evan is saying ), then I'll put the revenue from the sale towards one. Hopefully it's towards the lower end of that price spectrum though Just fed up with waiting for dual channel DDR, hehe. *Takes deep breath and counts to 10*

Uh oh, I think the server got boggled :Q I'm getting blank pages.

edit: ok, never mind, it's up again. I see the WinRAR tests didn't happen.

Just to update you guys on what's happening...I got in MSI's 655 board today, and so far all its been able to do is POST. After POSTing, everything freezes up. I'm actually starting to wonder what's up with MSI...here's what's been happening over the last few months:

1. The MSI K7N2G (nForce2 IGP) I was sent two days ago was almost completely DOA, it only POSTed once. MSI sent me a second K7N2G, which works now thankfully.
2. The first MSI K7N2-L (nForce2 SPP) I was sent in December was also DOA. MSI had to send me a second one, which worked.
3. I couldn't get the first MSI 648 board I was sent to work at first. MSI claims they troubleshooted it and it eventually worked (siting a memory problem), and then sent it back to me. It worked fine after that.

And now MSI's 655 board is barely POSTing. All in all, I'd have to say MSI is having some major QC issues, as I've only encountered two or possibly three DOA boards from all the other motherboard makers over the last 6 months. Perhaps it's just that MSI wants to send me their boards as early as possible and they're just not quite ready, I'm not 100% sure.

Evan

this is troubling. You post this here and in the review you really seem to like this board. what did you do to get it working and what assurances do we have that this type of thing won't happen to us if we buy this board?

Evan,

Thanks for the great review, it really has me leaning more towards the MSI over the Giga-Byte. One thing I'd like to know is, does the CPU wire trick work with this board so that we can achieve more cpu volts?

Yes, I understand your point. It is can be troubling, but the basic explanation I was given (and that I think is a very good explanation) is that MSI simply likes to send me boards as early as possible (which is good) even though they're not quite ready. That is, I get a lot of engineering samples from MSI, and that means those boards aren't a completely shipping (final) product yet. Later, MSI will "tweak" the board to make it ready for mass production, and I'll usually do a review of that board. The Granite Bay board I received from MSI wasn't an engineering sample for example, and it worked perfectly. The 648 and 655 boards I initially received from MSI were ES's, which certainly partly explains why they were flaky.

Thanks for the reply. I wasn't trying to nit pick here. i was just reading thru this thread for the first time, saw that post you made regarding the problems you had w/ the MSI board and then scrolled down to the end to try and find where you posted the resolution etc and never saw it.

You said you'd have some 800fsb testing...............what boards have this as an option.....does this mean they will be able to take the P4 3.6 HT 800fsb chips?

Nice review, but where are the overclocked benchmark comparisons like in the E7205 review?
