Another, even more serious monkey wrench is that, even with the release of the 655, there are no SiS chipsets that support Intel's Hyper-Threading technology

this is going to be the sale breaker for SiS 655...

Well, I'll have to perform my HT testing on the 655 boards quickly to see if this is true. I'll let you guys konw.

Well, guess I'll go for the Albatron afterall. With the ~$80 premium for the 655, I could instead sell my GF4 Ti 4400 and use the revenue + $80 to get a R9700 or something, which would give more of an increase than 845PE->655. *Sigh* addiction sucks, hehe.

SiS655 A0-version and supporting boards on the market

Charles Chou, Taipei; Christy Lee, DigiTimes.com [Monday 6 January 2003]

Motherboards based on the dual-channel-DDR333 SiS655 chipset from Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS) have recently started hitting the market. For the first batch of products, chipsets used in these boards are the A0-version SiS655, which does not support Intel?s Hyper-Threading Technology.

Currently, Gigabyte Technology, Micro-Star International (MSI) and AOpen have all introduced products based on the A0-version SiS655. Asustek Computer, however, said that it would adopt the Hyper-Threading-enabled B0 version directly. The B0-version SiS655 is sampling at present. Asustek said that volume production of the supporting motherboards is expected to begin at the end of this month.

Although the A0-version SiS655 features dual-channel-DDR333 support, many companies have enhanced their motherboards to support DDR400 through overclocking.

With advanced specifications, such as dual-channel DDR and AGP 8x graphics, the SiS655 was the Taiwanese chipset designer?s spotlight product in the second half of 2002. The company hoped that the new chipset would raise its overall product ASP (average selling price), which had suffered from its aggressive pricing policies to gain market share last year. According to the company, the SiS655 is initially set to be quoted over US$30, much higher than SiS?s other Pentium 4 chipsets, which are generally priced around US$20.

Digitimes

The GA-8SQ800 Ultra Claims to support Hyper-Threading on ther website, yet they have this disclaimer on the same page... Due to the limitation of SiS 655(A0) chipset, there will be some circumstance when Intel Pentium 4 Processor with Hyper-Threading Technology is applied and enabled. Please see the manual for detail.

How can they expect to charge a premium by being early with DC but sans HT? Who is so desperate for DC that they would buy an A0 chipped board knowing that the B0 is due in another month? Furthermore, $30 is really close to Intel's price and presumeably will be available around the same time.

yes i see a trend!

companies should keep their big mouths shut until a product is actually ready for release! :|

(this is getting rediculous)

The SINXP1394 is already selling for $210 at certain online vendors I believe. $310 is not realistic at all, don't worry.

Thugs...I'm wondering if maybe I shouldn't have posted the link? There's bound to be some KnuckleHead with more money than brains who's gonna pay that! It might give other companies an idea...What a joke! I am so DISAPPOINTED!!!
On second thought...I removed the link! I won't advertise for a company like that!

Thugs...you just hit 7000 !!! YeHaw!!! Maybe for that you'll receive a SINXP?! Yeah, I thought about it and it was a bad idea posting a link for a company like that, you kind of pointed me in the right direction about "companies keeping their big mouths shut"! I took your advice and corrected my "big mouth"!!!

Good move ArborBarber , last thing we need is people paying that kinda bux and perpetuating these rediculous prices. I saw two guys on Ebay a couple of weeks ago paying $510.00 and $610.00 for a couple of 8INXP's only to see an hour later, a vendor selling fifteen of them for $285.00 LOL. I'll bet those two guys felt like a couple of CHUMPS hehehe....

Nice review, good write! And it makes me keep my E7205 board. This below quote is a knock-out for anybody interested in hardware and overclocking. Every Northwood I have tested so far needs at least 0.2 on top to exploit full Mhz headroom. My 3.06 is yielding 3500 Mhz at 1.6, but goes up to 3880 Mhz at 1.75. And if you have a phase-change cooling set up, the voltage laod is becoming even more important. The same by the way applies for the SINXP from Giga, also only 0.1 volt on top, but the Giga is at least not undervolting.

"The Vcore adjustments present in the 655 Max BIOS are very weak, even for casual users. The max attainable Vcore is just 1.60V. But what makes this Vcore even worse is the fact that stock Vcore runs at an actual 1.44V on average (as read by the BIOS' hardware monitor). Therefore, in reality, you won't be able to operate your P4 processor at anything higher than about 1.54V."
