I don't think i could have talked her out of it. she was dead set on getting this car wich is why she went without me when said it was not a good idea.
If it's any consolation my brother did the same thing with a house against all advice.
Yes the title is in her and this guys name. though i did get him to sign a bill of sale. though he told her to throw it away after we turned in the title..

Wow, I'm sorry, but your SIL sounds pretty dumb. And how are you unable to find a decent car for $3k? I've found a ton of late 90s Corollas in that range. Sure they don't look new, but they're much better cars than a fricking Cavalier. Maybe prices are just a lot higher where you are.

actually she is very smart...she just lacks common sense.

yeah there are NO cheap cars around me. the stuff 1-3k are piles of shit. its rather sad.

You've been looking for a 3k car for a year? You must be doing something wrong.

I bet I could find two dozen 1-3k cars within 100 miles of you on any given day. Only 5 of them would really be worth looking at, but yeah.

sure if i went in 100 miles to chicago area i could find a few..

i swear its like people got stupid with the price of cars. Its like the price's for beaters have doubled. 3-4 years ago 2k would get you pretty decent car. now 2k buys something that MIGHT last a year.

its fucking silly.

People are poorer now so there are a lot fewer new cars being sold and it makes some sense that used would be worth more as a result. Still, I have looked at cars locally and have found some worth $3k.

though i am going to take it in. since she is 17 (18 in 2 months) if its expensive i will tell him to suck it and give the money back.

Transmission job, EXPECT at least $1000.

Title in both name? So, the seller legally still owns the car?!?!

lol at this thread... still waiting for the explanation as to why it'll still be registered under the seller's name?? makes no sense.

and looking a year for a 3000$ used car and only finding one shitty Cavalier that has a defective tranny? makes no sense.

So what....spend $30 in gas and go to Chicago...probably would have saved you from all the headache you have now, especially from this shady seller...

To my thinking, she is a minor legally under your care, she doesn't have a choice. You need to take control of the situation, regardless of whether she likes it or not, and do whatever you need to do to get her money back.

He probably is being cheap and trying save on registration fees/taxes. Instead of registering/titling the car in his name, then selling it to the SIL and having her register/title it in her name he probably thinks he can get away with registering/titling under both their names then having the SIL apply for a new title in just her name.

This thread wants me to have an aneurysm.. WTH would ANYONE think such an aggreement is a good idea? And who wouldn't be turning down the deal unless at the VERY LEAST the title was signed into her name or her caretakers?

The common sense.. It is not here..

I promise, you won't have to leave her name on the title either, haha

The fact that you and your wife, as intelligent adults, don't recognize the complete 200% utter idiocy of paying someone for a car and having the title in both names is clearly an indication of something fucked up.

This would be like buying a house, with 150k cash, from a bank. But the bank is like, "hey dude lets keep the title in both our names because I want to still own the house you just paid for IN FULL, sound cool?". Then you say yes. Then the bank basically says "hey dude thanks for paying me 150k for the house. Thing is, with the title in both our names I still own it and even though I appreciate the money and all I think I'm gonna sell it again to someone smart enough to not keep me a joint owner".

Seriously. I can only pray you're trolling, because the seriousness of the equal levels of stupidity from the minor and the clear lack of common sense of general practice involving migrating ownership of assets from both you and your wife HAS to be a joke, and cannot be real.

yeah i told her she is going to have to re-register the damn title in JUST her name and its going to cost her ANOTHER $180 (i think thats what it cost)

i was not with her when she went and baught it. When i was with her i made her leave to talk her out of it. i figured get her home and show her why the car has issues. she went work (she works at a restaurant he goes to) and told her his wife wants it. if she wants it she needs to get it. so she went after work to the bank and got the car. No i was not there.

i did tell her to go back and get a bill of sale..but yeah not happy.

we have been parking the car in my garage and she is driving my wife's escort.

I did take it into the guy that works on my cars (worked in dealership that was closed thanks to the goverment buying gm..) he said it would be about $400 to fix it (parts and his labor is free for her).

i can't remember what he said it was. i don't deal with cars much. but he said it would be about $400. he said rest of the car is great. the engine was babied, the brakes are new and in great shape. EVERYTHING else on the car is good.

you guys want another good laugh at my expense? guess what? My Father and Grandfather owned car lots. when my Grandfather died i got part of it. I have worked as a salesmen (god i hated it. i was the WORST salesmen EVER!)...lol yeah.

Can you just remove someone from a title without them signing something?

Title transfer cost $8 here in AZ. Registration cost $40 or so a year for an old car

Waggy, I'm sorry so many people are dogging you on here with all the comments about you being stupid for buying it when they clearly missed the multiple times you have stated you were not with her when she decided to buy it.

Regardless, it does seem as though you came out way ahead on this deal with only approximately $400 in repairs to make the car drivable again. As long as the title transfer goes smoothly it appears as though this potential really bad deal could turn out quite well.

Please keep us apprised of any new developments as this has become somewhat of a soap opera for me.

No. Requires both parties to sign off on a joint title. Part of my horror at this situation.

Only if the title reads AND, if the title reads OR then either can sell without the others signature.(at least that is how it is here in wis)

Yeah. About that. The difference is that even though she did it with nobody else around, she still did it, and Mr./Mrs. Waggy both decided it would be a stellar idea to come here and ask us our opinions on it - making it clearly evident that they didn't understand the full repercussions of a shared title.. in addition to having to ASK if they were getting scammed for sure.

So yes. They didn't do the act. But by proxy, they're contributing to the continued stupidity of the situation. I'm a little surprised you don't recognize that.
