which one of these is better?

If I were to go with the AX-7 I would be using an 80mm (40+ cfm fan...not too noisy tho)

if I were to go with the SK-7 I would be using a 70mm TMD Fan (about 39cfm)

Thanks

Can you even get an AX-7 anymore? I ordered one, and they replaced it with the SK-7 (it was brand new). From what I know, the SK-7 is an overall better HSF, and it takes both 70mm and 80mm fans, so you can have the high flow fan on there, and it should be less annoying sounding to boot.

most reviews i've read show that the ax7 performs better than the sk7 with a lower cfm fan. so if you already have a low cfm fan, maybe grab the ax7 if its available. if you're getting everything brand new, i'd get the sk7. i have it with a ys tech adjustable. works like a charm. my case sits on the carpet, so it does get dusty in there and i have to blow the dust from between the fins on the sk7 every few months.

I'm not sure what you mean by low but I would think 80x25 2500rpm fan with SK7 should still outperform AX7 under load.

yeah, i would too. the review compared them against each other with the same fan (something like a 20cfm fan) and the ax7 outperformed the sk7. they mentioned something about the fins or the way it was designed.... don't remember where it was though. either way, even after reading it, i still chose the sk7 and am very happy with it.

they're both good heatsinks, and probably will yield very very similar temps..

just that ax-7 only accepts 80mm fans i believe... while sk7 there's a little bit more variability.

sk7 is heavier, and longer... while ax-7 is wider. i think??

Correct. SK7 fits more mobos than AX7. Its base is smaller...

Can't remember where I saw the review, but it was a comparison of the ax-7, zalman, and the slk800. In almost all cases, the 800 was the best but, with very low flow fans, the ax-7 bested the 800. Anyway, I would assume that the ax-7 would be better with a low flow fan than the sk7 but, if you're going to go with a tmd fan, I think the sk7 would be better. In any event, they would be pretty close in performance from other reviews I've read. They are both kickass heat sinks.

Wrong.

This topic comes up weekly. Both will peform identically. I have both. Actually, if I took the time to take averages, I'd say the AX7 is "slightly" cooler...maybe 1 or 2 degrees using a 30 cfm fan. I also have used a slk800....i'd say it cools maybe 5* lower, MAXIMUM, than the other two.

Get whatever you can afford, and will fit your mobo.

Check out this site:

http://www.case-mod.com/store/defau...a5ecf39f6374dda

Thermalright SK-7 $14.99

Thermalright SLK-700 $20.99

Thermalright SLK-800A $27.49

Thermalright SLK-800U $29.99

Thermalright SLK-900U $36.99

--------------------------------------------------------------------

I think that the SK-7 is a hell of a deal! And so are the 800u and 900u!

The SK-7 with a Y.S. Tech 70mm TMD 36 CFM fan is quiet and performs within 5 degrees C of a 900u [1700XP DUTC3 OC'ed to 2.1 Ghz @ 1.7 vCore ]

So its quite a good heatsink at $14.99.

And http://www.nexfan.com has the TMD fans for $5.00!

---------------------------------------------------------------------

I just ordered 2 of the Theramaltake SmartFan II from bestbyte.net for $7.99 each with $1.00 shipping per fan!

http://www.bestbyte.net/Product.cfm...ryID=8&Keyword=

So two fans cost $17.98 delivered, and they take PayPal!

Bestbyte has an excellent resellerratings.com score. The last order I placed with them was A+ in every category...they did everything right.

They also have a great deal on the Zalman 36 CFM 80mm FM-1 [ $3.99] and Zalman 49 CFM 92mm FM-2 [$4.50 ].

The Zalman fans are fairly quiet and have a plug in speed control [ resistor ] for silent operation at lower CFM.
