Skydrive as the *default* document save location?

That sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. No internet connection, no access to your local documents!

I've got too many emails from accounts of friends that have been hacked. Nothing like storing everything there by default so someone in China can have all your information, change password, and laugh. Don't worry for a couple $100 MS will help.

This came to mind after I read the "someone in China" comment relative to the SkyDrive:

PICARD - Quickly, Mister Data. Lock out the main computer.

DATA: I have isolated the main computer with a fractal encryption code. It is highly unlikely the Borg will be able to break it.

I'm sure if you're not online, that will change. Also you should be able to change the default.
If not.. well...all i can say is that they are pretty dumb!

You can already change the default, but how many average users actually know where that option is, what it does, and why it matters?

And if you're not online, it may change, but thats a moot point when you're now offline and you can't access the files you stored in the default location when you *are* online because they got dumped on your skydrive.

Its amazing how many people dont understand how folders work, much less default locations. They just hit "save" and save it wherever it automatically pops up to. Windows 8 already has enough usability issues, we don't need any more steps making it harder for people :/

Very good points. it's going to be interesting to see how they deal with these kinds of problems!!

Just change the default setting to a local drive. Office 2013/365 is the same way and can be changed with a couple clicks of the mouse.

Umm... this isn't true? If a person is only saving their documents locally and never messes with SkyDrive online, all of your documents will always be there.

It's only when you sign into another Windows 8.1 PC that it will show document icons that aren't actually located on your computer, but you need to have an Internet connection for the icons of your documents to show up anyway. And when you click on them, they'll download seamlessly in the background. It even works with commandline tools.

Your post is FUD.

Almost all the post around here anymore are FUD. Over exaggeration and total garbage for the most part..
SkyDrive is hands down the most useful "innovation" by any company in the past few years.

Yeah, I was gonna say.

I've been using DropBox as a default file location for some time. It automatically means all my document files are backed up multiple times, everywhere the instant I hit save, including on my home NAS.

Of course, if offline it doesn't mean you can't access your files- there's of course a local copy on every device on the local dropbox directory. As soon as connected again, everything syncs to the latest updated version. I'm sure Skydrive must work the same way.

I now consider it bassackward to work without a cloud backup- it's the exact opposite of the fear expressed here of losing files. If something goes blooey with the computer and you're just saving locally, you've lost everything.
