I will be purchasing a 6600k, but I have been dragging my feet and I plan on purchasing a gun so the CPU is on the back burner at the movement. I already have my case and Evo 212.

4.6GHz is awesome! I need that kind of power for the very CPU orientated Flight Simulator. That's my main game and its install is around 55 GBs thus far. I back that install up to an external HDD and keep it in a fire proof safe. It's been a culmination of years worth of airport addons, aircraft scenery and my own Area-51 creation complete with Janet 737's and 767's flying in and out of the base. I want to buy another external HDD for backup and another fire proof safe.

Anyway... OP, what board are you using. I like Gigabyte and my current board is a Gigabyte and I plan on using sysprep to transfer my current install to another Gigabyte. No harm in trying. I so don't want to have to reinstall everything. Nope, nope nope.

ASUS Z170M-PLUS in the 6600K machine, ASUS Maximus VIII Ranger for the 6700K machine.

A 3 pin voltage controlled fan is fine for a case fan.

You will need to tell your mobo that it's a voltage controlled fan rather than a PWM fan.

Is a three pin voltage controlled and four pin PWM? I didn't know you have to tell BIOS that. Now I need to look in my new case about that. It's a Cooler Master Storm Scout II.

Asus users I highly recommend watching this video. It covers a few specifics as to how these boards can be tuned, the DIGI+ section is especially interesting. I managed to shave 5c from my average LinX temperatures by setting Phase control from extreme to optimised. I'm pretty sure my ambient temps are warmer than when it was running the same test at 95c.

Have discovered that someone with a watercooled CPU didn't get the same temp drop that I did, so it could be the extra heat from the VRM's are affecting my air cooler, and switching them down a notch is enough to reduce that impact.

Yes, the 3 pin has no actual speed control, it must be controlled by varying the voltage to it.

Most newer mobos will allow you to set the fan for DC or PWM speed control.

They also usually have a program that will do most of this for you, such as Fan Expert with an ASUS board. It will detect the fans automatically and learn how to control them.

I think Gigabyte calls it Smart Fan?

Check out these efficiency charts. Basically Sandra applies increasing loads from 1% to 100% and measures the average clockspeed the processors are running at in order to process these loads.

Bear in mind that my CPU is overclocked to 4.6GHz, hence why it peaks higher than the others at the end.

So I built my skylake rig

6700k
asus z170 pro gaming
3000mhz Corsair RAM
850w EVGA G2 PSU (may go SLI in future)
480gb Sandisk SSD
Noctua d14 CPU cooler

I haven't overclocked it and probably won't for a year or two (when ever I feel I need the extra processing power). It's running at low 50's, playing SC2 and CS GO, which is fairly hot since it's running at stock?

I'm having a strange problem with my newly built system (see sig). It's perfectly stable while in use, but every couple of days or so, I'll come back to the system and it won't wake up. I have it configured to not go to sleep, only the monitors go to sleep after 15 mins. Though I know its not just a matter of the monitors not coming because I can't RDP into it either when its in that state. The only remedy is a hard reset. The system is also not overclocked at all. Anyone have any ideas on how I can pinpoint the cause?

I can only suggest updating the motherboard BIOS. Edit: Just my best guess

Way overdue since I didnt get photos out of the cam in time. But here they are:

After I had optimized the fan profile in BIOS. Prime95 peaks at 75-80C with a slow (30%) 1500rpm fanspeed and 800rpm system fan. Completely silent. Idle CPU fanspeed is 1000rpm. Maximum is 3000 or so. But I havent tested that part since it wasnt needed.

Windows 10 also installed in ~5 minutes.

Intel i7 6700K, MSI Z170I Gaming Pro AC, Crucial MX200 2260 500GB, Crucial Ballistix Sport 2x8GB 2400Mhz DDR4, Intel TSA15A Cooler.

All fitted in a Silverstone SG08B together with a EVGA GTX980 Superclocked.

I had originally thought to get the Zalman CNPS8900 Quiet. But due to worries with the mounting bracket and SSD I got the TS15A.

Downsides?
No NVME with the MX200, but that is pointless until 3DXpoint anyway
SSD slot could have supported 2280. 2260 and 2242 limits the options a bit.
Useless SATA Express slot.
Useless PS2 port on the back. (At least in my eyes)

Next project is a Skylake NUC.

IT IS....ALIVE!

Last night I smoked tested my skylake i7-6700k. I even did a SSD swap from my old computer.

The only problem I am having at the moment is the blu-ray drive was not detected and the LAN was not working.
