Thank you!
Now with the $25 off coupon from slickdeals, net I now am only paying $64.47 after rebate and only $139.47 up front. I've been using the software I got from a survey posted on this great forum and have been waiting for the price to drop to get the GPS. The software is very simple to use and with the voice commands I won't have to look at the laptop when driving. This is great. Thanks.<B>
Thanks for the info on the Price change! You Rock! $80.85 back in the pocket.

Another thing nice about this system is that the PC CARD gps unit
that come is NEMA compliant, meaning you can use with with most
GPS software. The other Sony unit only works with their own binary
format.

This makes it a sweeter deal for me. I have street maps and didn't want to dish out the cash for the Garmin GPS. Thanks for the info.

I have a Garmin too. It expensive but worth it. Its a lot more
sensitive to anything else I ever played with. So you took advantage
of my posting of the survey. I'm still dissappointed that it doesn't
support Win2K and NT. But for $68 bucks and I can use this with other
software, I can't complain too much.

Does any of you have this already? Do you like it? What do you actually use it for? I read that it lacks some functionality. True?

You can get an extra 5% off going through pointclick which brings it down to $56 or so shipped... but is it any good?!

Wow! Current weather &amp; road conditions? That's pretty sweet. What about the DeLorme Earthmate GPS Receiver or the DeLorme Earthmate GPS Road Warrior Edition(for use with palm pilot)?
Earthmate GPS
From their website, I couldn't tell if the Earthmate has the Weather &amp; Road condition feature like the skymap does.

SkyMap Pros
PC Card (BIG plus!-Internal!)
Weather and road conditions
$166 - 75 rebate = $91

SkyMap Cons
Not to be used with Palm device

Earthmate RoadWarrior Edition
Pros
Use with palm and/or laptop
Cons
No Weather and Road condition reports?
$177

Hmmm. THis is tough. I'm really trying to decide whether or not I will actually use the GPS device with my palm or not. If I'm not going to use my palm, the obvious choice is SkyMap. But If I might use my palm(not wanting to lug my laptop around-GPS and Palm fit in my pocket) then I should consider the Earthmate. Man! This is tough. Almost $100 difference though! If anyone has used either of these devices, please post your experiences. Thanks a bunch,

Maybe we could combine the 20% off at a bunch of stores with this nice rebate for a great price now that the Onvia coupon has expired.

20% off thread

Pricegrabber search for the INTERNAL (PCMCIA) product (the one talked about above)

ack! avoid the external one! see what barebottoms says below!
Pricegrabber search for the EXTERNAL product

Let me know if you find anything! I'm looking too... BTW, does anyone know if the Garmin eTrex can be hooked up to the computer too? Does it have that standard support or proprietary? I'm going digging at garmin.com I guess, hehe...

Garmin eTrex:
eTrex at Garmin.com
Interfaces: RS232 with NMEA 0183, RTCM 104 DGPS data format and proprietary GARMIN

CMV,
That pricegrabber link may be innacurate. Are there more than 1 type of SkyMap 2000. The links at pricegrabber seem to show an external type model, not the pcmcia card type. Use the cnet list up top.

Zero: I was actually interesed in the external version... Hopefully nobody got confused by that link. I put in a link to the internal version too so both are there now.

cmv... don't get the external version! You're stuck using SkyMap if you do.
The external GPS uses Sony's Binary Format, so its not compatible with anything
else other than Skymap. Which means you can't use it with NT or 2000.

Is this rebate only for the external version? Or does it matter?

Barebottoms,
Are you saying that the internal version supports NT and 2k while the external version does not? I can't seem to find any pictures or info on the internal version anywhere. Not even at etaks website.

The SkyMap software will ONLY Work with 95 and 98. The nice thing about
the PC Card version is that it can work in 2 modes, Sony's Binary format
and NEMA format. Since it works with NEMA, you can use it with almost
all Mapping Software that supports NEMA format (like MS Expedia).
The external version of SkyMap, will only work with SkyMap since you don't
have the option of using NEMA mode on the GPS.

I just know this because I HAD an external version and traded it in for
a Garmin because it didn't work with NT and 2000k or linux...

Here's a review:
SkyMap 2000 GPS

But it's the external. I'm still trying to find reviews for the internal version.

The weather and road condition feature is free for 30 days. Then you have to pay $60/year(which is cheap) BUT you have to have an internet connection to check the conditions. THat sux. I thought it came through the GPS.

Zero, back to how I came across the free copy of SkyMap I posted here for filling
out a survey... Was because I had an OmniSky modem for my Palm Pilot. I was trying
the Etak service (the Weather and Traffic condition service). Anyway, if you do
have a Palm, and need a wireless modem, you can use that same modem with a simple cable hack on your Laptop. Then you'd get the best of everything!

As for the review of the Internal and External. The Software is called SkyMap. The only difference between internal and external is the stuff I said above. Otherwise, the Software is Exactly the same. I just didn't like the fact that I was locked into only using SkyMap software (which is really good), but just does not work on NT and 2K.

So let me get this stratight - It's the software (skymap) that is not compatible with NT and Win2k? And the pcmcia card will work with NT or Win2k if I use a different software program that is compatible with Nt and 2k? Or are you saying that the hardware and software is not at all compatible with NT or 2k? I'm currently using NT on my work laptop(the laptop I'd like to use it in since I travel with it so much) but I have another laptop that has Win98. I may purchase it just because it's so cheap to use with my Win98 laptop and look into the Earthmate for my NT laptop. By the way Barebottoms, thanks for all your input!!!

CMV,
If you want the external version you may want to check out Staples.com. THey have it for $213 but you can have them pricematch it to about $160. Then use a $30 coupon and you can get it for $130 + tax/shipping. Then use your $75 coupon to bring it down to a total of about $60! Not bad ay?

- It's the software (skymap) that is not compatible with NT and Win2k?
Yes, SkyMap the software is NOT compatible with NT and 2k

- And the pcmcia card will work with NT or Win2k if I use a different software program that is compatible with Nt and 2k?

Correct, the PC-Card(pcmcia) will work with ANY NEMA compliant software that
runs on 2k, NT, Linux.. etc..

- I may purchase it just because it's so cheap to use with my Win98 laptop and look into the Earthmate for my NT laptop.

I would buy it just because its a nice price. But I would stick with the PC-CARD version, then get MicroSoft Street Maps with the Rebates when they roll around, which supports NEMA GPS's like the internal version we are talking about here and it works with NT and 2K. I just hate having a cool GPS that will only work with their software, which doesn't even work with NT or 2K. If you get the PC-CARD version, you're NOT locked in. IF you get the External Version, you're stuck with SkyMap software.

TurboCivic:
To get the Internal version, just find it anywhere. The rebate form from NetBates (linked above through the CNET price search), does not saying you're limited to buying it from any particular vendor.
