For PCMCIA version best price for in stock now seems to be at www.Chumbo.com $95 shipped. Compusa also has them at $99 plus shipping on the web site.

If they will honor the coupon on this version it is still a good deal. It is possible that now that cnet has pulled it they will not.

I got the same email as cejay: I ordered "in stock", got email confirmation that it was in stock, and then got same email as cejay.
Screwed and tatooed by ONVIA....

BTW, they are listed on www.f*ckedcompany.com as having rumors of employee layoffs.

FACTS: Directly from a support technicians mouth.

SERIAL VERSION: Is propiertary. Will only work with the Skymap 2000 (or similar version).

PCMCIA Version: Uses the NMEA standard for GPS (95% of all GPS units use this).

The monthly subscription fee is only IF YOU WANT to have realtime traffic updates on the SkyMap 2000 software. To use this, you will also need a Richochet, cell, or any internet connection...the GPS unit does NOT provide this.

Enjoy,

Souka

I ordered it at Onvia thru Pointclick when it's already out of stock. Though I probably will not get the skymap (it's a bonus), at least I can get back my pending payment from pointclick.

They can not do this.
There is no way that CNET can post a rebate, then say the manufacturer has told them to remove it after 100's of buyers took advantage of it. The product would not have been bought had it not been for the rebate. If etak does not honor the rebate, then CNET must. If there was a mistake, it was made by the 2 compaines, and not the buyer. There is no disclaimer on the offical rebate form that says it only pertains to a specific model, therefore the rebate is valid for any model. They need to pay us buyers first, and then fight each other to see who ends up paying the bill.

I smell trouble. That starts with T, that rhymes with C that stands for CNET. Heck it also rhymes with E that stands for ETAK.

Either way I don't think us customers have to stand for this.

Somebody posted that they had called the rebate center and the center gave him two product codes that they were rebating. Somebody else confirmed that one of those was the pcmcia flavor. Let's get a deposition from that guy before the suits have him bumped off.

This is the post from www.ETAK.com website.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Question: I saw a link from Netbate or Ebate that showed a rebate on your PCMCIA connected GPS product, SkyMap 2000GPS\PCMCIA but it is gone now. Is it still in effect?

The SkyMap 2000 GPS/PCMCIA UPC P-35902600-7 does not have and has not had an open* rebate since March of 2000. Unfortunately Netbate secured the information and applied it to the wrong product without our knowledge or consent. We have contacted Netbate and they have removed it from the incorrect product. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.
*There was a rebate for CompUSA purchases only, that ended 9/31/00. If you made this purchase your form from CompUSA will still be accepted.

I urge you to send an email to the address on the SkyMap Rebate FAQ page stating the details of your purchase. I am really disappointed with etak - especially considering they originally said that even though the rebate wasn't supposed to apply to the PCMCIA product they would honor it. Now they won't. Why should I ever do business with etak again?

I think C-NET is the one at fault here since the rebate form (according to ETAK) was never autorized by them. I received my PCMCIA model, cut out the UPC, & sent the forms certified mail (I send any rebate forms $50 or more via certified to CMA) - so I can't return it. I would NEVER have bought it without the rebate.

I ordered the serial version from onvia last week right before most people got in on it. It said in stock at the time, and today I just got an email from them saying they don't have it in stock and are canceling my order. It took them a friggen week to tell me that? Now I can't order this for a good price because all of the places with a good price are sold out. Thanks Onvia, I'll be sure to shop with you morons again....

I am using Win NT 4.0 SP5 on my IBM ThinkPad 390x. When I insert the pc card, it is recognized but when I go into control panel and go to PC card, the device status shows "1) No database entry for this card." ANd there is a big phat red X over the device. It shows that it's on Com 4 IRQ 11. ANy ideas on how to get this thing workin properly on NT? Oh, I am using Microsoft Streets & Trips 2001 and the etak pc card is set to NMEA. THanks!

I just received a call back from the rebate center and spoke with a CSR. She had me read off the UPC code, from my pcmcia version, then came back on and stated it was still good for the rebate.

Thanks Kitty.

I can get the skymap 2000 software to work with the gps unit in win95 but I can't get the gps unit to work with ms streets and trips 2001. Does the above patch fix this? When I start up MS streets and trips and go to "tools" and then "gps" all my options are grayed out. weird. Thanks.

I believe so, but I won't know until I get the patch. I will post something when I do.

If you are a phone person, you can give him a call. He was quick to get back with me.

zero, it never worked with NT or 2K. Its the Protected API of NT.

ygreenkitty, can you give us NT'ers and 2K'ers Chris's email address so we can get the the NT version too? If not, did you just email support?

Thanks.
