Skype or VOIP (SIP) Calls Now Possible with Fring (Jailbroken) Over 3g/Edge

Digging around the internet today, I found a small story about a patch that was released to allow Fring calls using Edge/3g on the latest fring for the iPhone. Head to Google and you should find what you're looking for.

I tested it personally here in Rome with my SkypeOut and can say it works rather well. Calls over 3g have a small 1 second lag while Edge has a greater lag (3 seconds or so). I'm not sure of battery life yet, but a 10 minute call uses about 3 MBs (up and down total) of data.

Now, my iPhone is that much more amazing. Unlimited calling to/from the US with my data plan.

Couldnt you just use WIFI and be 100% free and not even have a data connection?

I do not have a data connection and plan to do this.

Just download it from the AppStore and it works over WiFi. You only have to hack it to make it work on 3G/EDGE.

Umm.. good question. I thought that Fring was free, but I believe you do have to pay for Skype minutes to use them as a phone. I think it's like $3/mo. I don't use Skype though, so I'm not sure.

EDIT: Just looked over and Skype-to-Skype is free, Fring is free, you only have to pay if you call a landline.

can you call cell phones? THATD be great for the 2 weeks I am in europe and grab a free wifi to make free calls.

Yeah, in the US, there is no distinction between cell phones and landlines when it comes to VoIP rates. It's always "calls to the US." You will have to buy a few minutes to call back to the US (landlines or cell phones), but the rates are around 2 cents a minute with Skype.

If you have the SkypeOut US subscription ($3 a month), you could actually use your unlimited data plan with AT&T to make unlimited phone calls while in the US. In Europe. you'll need wifi to make calls, unless you sign up for roaming data, which could be outrageously expensive.

I will purchase 10$ or something minimal to use over there...I am on T-Mobile jailbroken/unlocked 2.1, etc...without a data plan....but wifi will be around when I am in europe.

ok this is what i have been waiting for, i have been using the n800 for skype. So how do i get an iphone nowadays? I dont want a contract and/or at&t. I have hacked a couple iphones it really easy but they were the old ones.

Well unfortunately you still can't hack the 3G model. So your only luck right now is to find an old iPhone 2G.

You can hack the 3g model. You can jailbreak it to allow other software not in the App store, but you can't unlock it yet to be used on other carriers besides AT&T.

ahh that sucks guess i will still wait... though does skype work on the old version over wifi? I would like to keep using skype as primary phone and have a t mobile to go sim in there as well.

Good luck with free wifi...it is not nearly as prevalent in Europe as it is here in the states.

Actually, I've been able to find free wifi all over the place, it just depends on what country you are in. Many require that all wifi networks be secure due to cyber terrorism, but many, many restaurants and bars will have free wifi, you just have to ask for the WEP key. Budapest was incredible for free wifi. I basically found the entire city blanketed in a free wifi network.

Be sure to check for a KFC or a McDonald's, which almost universally have open wifi networks.

Mcdonalds hasnt been open/free in a long time. Atleast in the US
