So, this is a seperate DLC download and not an update. Should I do it?

does this mean I have to play the whole game over again now?

You don't lose your save files so can install the HRT DLC and just play Skyim from your last save etc....,I find it makes everything look smoother graphics wise, not a major improvement but noticeable.

Nothing to lose by doing so,game runs just as well as before for me with my 2GB 560Ti card but with sightly better looking graphics.

It's extremely subtle, you're not giving up your HD custom textures for this.

The community textures look a lot more 'different' since they're basically remade from scratch. The official texture pack is basically the original textures just not down-scaled as much as they were in the released game.

I think I deleted my saves after I beat it because by then I was pretty thoroughly done with the game after 80 hours in.

Noticed some improvements in the textures and overall imagery of the game. Everything look sharper and smoother.

But damn if they could do something about in-game AA/AF...even at 4x/4x my rig is a slideshow...I have to force AA and AF in CCC but it's not as good as the in-game one. I still have the jaggies around almost everything even if I set AA to 8xQ (Edge-detect)/8xAF and on Super sampling AA...

So I leave it on MSAA mode, 4xQ/4x Edge-detect and get excellent FPS.

I did that, in fact I completely reinstalled Skyrim (all this while forgetting to make a copy of my 60 hours save game...).

So I just freshly restarted the game with a new character. 2 Handers this way!

But yeah, i'd uninstall mods before installing the HRT pack.
But it seems to work on your side so I wouldn't worry. You might not see the difference though since you already have some texture enhancement mods installed, you can't see the official pack in it's full glory.

I looked at some before/afters. I can see changes, but they were pretty minor. Not significant enough for me to want to start over.

The sad part (and yes, I will say this again), is that the texture mods the community released almost 3 months ago had a bigger impact in looks and almost non-existent in performance.

Soon as I saw the before after screen shots I stopped my download. This isn't impressive at all especially when it adds performance issues.

I've changed my mind about the DLC pack, it is totally worth it and is a complete game changer overall. It doesn't cover everything, and it inexplicably skips some of the absolutely most crucial textures for some reason, which is unfortunate. However the improvement to weapons and armor alone make this crucial. If you use shields, like I do at the moment, you're going to be extremely pleased with this pack.

I was forced to remove a great many texture mods just to get this to run on my system, I was out of VRAM otherwise. I've also dropped to 2xAA + FXAA. This manages to keep me hovering around ~1210MB's of VRAM, bumping to 4xAA is out of the question now unfortunately. Previously with all the Skyrim HD mods (and many, many, many others) I was running full Ultra, 4xAA + FXAA. Not sure the VRAM usage before but I was always fine...etc.

So I won't be removing the DLC for anything (it is removable by the way, just disable the .esp's). I'll probably start adding back some of the more crucial texture mods that I hastily uninstalled today as time goes on and see how things go. Mountain rock textures is kind of a big one and the DLC doesn't improve those I believe.

It's too bad this GTX570 can't handle anything more... nvidia better hurry up with those next gen cards already!

On a side note, I just installed the "More Powerful Dragons" mod and I was lucky enough to get into a dragon fight soon after. One of the Stormcloak Forts/Castles drew it's attention so I didn't really feel the full brunt of the attack, however the dragon, just a regular dragon too not a special one, completely obliterated all the Stormcloak guards. LOVE THAT! It also killed two horses, but the third survived. I never liked the vanilla dragons because a Giant could kill them or a group of guards wouldn't lose anyone...etc. Who needs a dragonborn when dragons are so wimpy...etc.

I'll link it if anyone's interested, I prefer this over the more popular "Deadly Dragons" mod since this one doesn't change anything except for the dragons damage and magic/weapon resistances. The other mod does a lot of other stuff I didn't want.

Well there's the 580, and isn't there a 590 either out or in the works?

Off to see how the HD textures run on my 1 GB 560ti at ultimate settings.

Edit: seem to run fine on my card. There is maybe a little bit of hitching right after I enter a cell, if I try to spin the pov quickly, but it's gone right away. I presume this is an impact of the additional bandwidth needed to copy textures to the card's memory. Visually, I would say it's a definite improvement. I've only checked out Winterhold, the Arch Mage's quarters, and Solitude, but I'm pretty pleased so far.

Edit: getting 55 fps in the open west of Whiterun. Just for kicks I dropped AF to 8x from 16x, but the framerate didn't change at all.

Edit: did a quick bounty quest in Redoran's Retreat, then went to Whiterun and Dragonsreach. Getting a steady 55-60 fps in all those areas. It drops down to 45 or so while loading textures when I first enter a cell, and then bounces right back. Overall I'm very happy, and can't say there's been any negative impact from the HD textures on my 1GB card.

I also can't see any performance penalty, I started a new one but I haven't reached Markath yet, IIRC the frame went to 25ish over there on my 6950 at 1080p. So far I'm seeing 59-60.

Incredibly subtle changes. I haven't really noticed a difference in performance though. I'm running a 3GHz dualcore AMD with 4GB RAM and a 1GB Radeon HD4850. The game runs pretty well, 1280x1024 maxed without AA. I haven't ran a benchmark but I'll say its well over 30fps. Maybe the amount of graphics memory is more important than the processing power in this case?

Don't have any before and after pics, sorry. But these are shots with just the stock game + hd texture pack, and some tweaks to the game .ini files that I found at tweakguides.com, I think it looks incredible without any actual mods.

It uses >2GB of VRAM at 1080 for me btw.

How? I have the same thing and other textures mods loaded and it doesn't even go past 1700MB.

Maybe I need to turn off the texture mod that is supposedly better than the official one? I got like 25 mods going at once too.

From what I understand, texture usage depends alot on VRAM size of your graphics card.

My cards are 4GB of Vram, I am assuming yours are probably 2GB right ? This doesn't mean that my game looks better, or has more textures loaded, it's just the way the game is able to utilize more Vram for my cards because of all the space available.
