Those who own Skyrim and all DLC on PC, or own the Legendary Edition on PC, will get a free upgrade to the Skyrim Special Edition when it releases on October 28th. The versions for the PS4 and XBOX ONE will also be getting mod support for the first time. Upgraded visuals come for all the versions whether on console or PC.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition, which will release on PC, PlayStation 4 and xbox One on October 28th, won’t be a simple remaster, as it will include plenty of new features such as remastered art and effects, volumetric god rays, dynamic depth of field, screen-space reflections and more. Following Fallout 4’s example, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Definitive Edition will also support mods on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Those who have purchased The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim complete with all DLC packs on PC will be happy to know that they will be able to get the Special Edition at no additional cost. Unfortunately, it won’t be the same for those who purchased either the PlayStation 3 and xbox 360 versions of the game. Not surprising, but still disappointing.

Would have liked a new Elder Scrolls game. Still this will be a good excuse to replay Skyrim yet again, I suppose.

I would have preferred a Morrowind upgrade, but this makes sense. Skyrim is still relevant and this should be worth a nice cash infusion for Bethesda.

The next elder scrolls is likely still in post production, there is no way there going to be making an announcement on that soon. Bringing updated graphics and mods for skyrim to the consoles is an easy decision.

Eh, a few new shaders and such aren't enough to get me to replay Skyrim. Cool for those that waited I guess.

I have the version that came with the ES series collection, assuming that works too?

Considering it's free for existing owners, it's proving even more that it's been the best ~$20 I've ever spent!

I'll be grabbing it. I'd have been willing to spend a bit to get it!

I Have all of the DLC. I bought all of them as they were released. Best money on a game I ever spent. I'm still in the world of Fallout, but will gladly jump back into SKYRIM when this edition is out.

So, how many of you guys have Fallout 4? How is that game technically? 64-bit and DX11 correct? Did they finally upgrade to AVX or even SSE, or are they still on FPU-hardware era X87?

They've updated it a bit, but the engine shows its age. I wasn't fond of the game because of it. I guess other games spoiled me in certain ways.

Wonder how it will compare to some of the mods already available on pc. Some of them look damn impressive from watching vids.

Bought the Legendary edition ages ago, but never got around to playing it. Did play through the vanilla game at release.

Does it say what the Special Edition adds to the PC version other than the Mods from Bethesda.net? I can't seem to find anything

Seems like a total waste of resources for an old game that already has a mountain of mods that make it look a lot better than it did. Why not put that into a new IP instead of an old title.

Because they get 2 additional consoles worth of sales.

The improved graphics arent the main reason why this is good for the PC version, although they are better than nothing. Nicer graphics being baked into the game means less mods, and thus far less problems with mods. But the real treat will be the updated code that makes Skyrim better performing, more stable, and increases the reach of what is possible for Skyrim mods.

Better graphics, and probably updated software code, apparently getting ported over from Fallout 4.

Because this is mostly about getting Skyrim onto the PS4 and XB1 which isn't a waste of resources. It will sell very well on those platforms. It is a good business decision. That there is a PC version is more of a happy side effect, as most of the work of updating textures and the game engine for consoles also apply directly to the PC. They are doing the work anyway, so why not go the extra mile for PC users. You are right that mods can do most of it, but sometimes having an updated release is nice.

If they had released Skyrim SE on consoles only and not PC, people would have complained about that also.

I bought this game for $5 a while ago, but never played through it (I started it). Don't really care if I get updates but it doesn't hook me in like FO series... maybe I should give it another go.

People are really interested in a 5 year old game being released for the ps4/xbone? I get why they re-release much older games, but this one is pretty recent.

I can only speak for myself, but as someone who until recently owned a PS4 and XB1 I think there is a demand for quality games of any kind of those platforms, even relatively young titles. If I were to repurchase a PS4 or XB1 tomorrow, there are maybe 5-10 must have titles for either console and many of those are HD remakes or remasters.

Skyrim SE will sell like crazy because it is a known quantity in a sea of mediocrity. As PC gamers we sometimes take for granted that we have a very deep and wide catalog of games to choose from.

Maybe your feelings will be borne out and the game won't sell so well, but I'm a bit more optimistic.

This will likely eb enough for me start a ~3rd playthrough (well, 4th? though I never "finished" playthroughs 2 and 3).

I did pick up Dragonborn in the winter steam sale but haven't actually launched Skyrim in more than a year now.

Would be nice to actually be able to jump in without spending an evening searching and installing a few dozen mods.

I guess this won't be part of it, but it would be nice if they added content mods like Frostfall or some of the other popular ones.

Yeah that was me as well. I'm just sick of seeing this engine, it's very limited in some ways. It impacted my enjoyment of the game needing to see a loading screen every 2 minutes.

It will be a nice update for those who never modded their Skyrim to look like that (or similar to it). I'll definitely give that update a try, but I'll do it with Mod Manager, I wouldn't have another choice otherwise (since I do have a 'vanilla' non-modded Skyrim profile). However, if for some reason that update conflicts with almost any mods I've installed I'll have to pass (but I highly doubt that game-play related mods would conflict). But yeah, if some people around still never played Skyrim at all, or if they did but never bothered with modding (or graphics-related modding) then that's going to be a good opportunity to jump in.

VR support would have been the candle on the icing. But with the mods and texture packs I have, it already chugs at 30fps. I suspect it will also break some mods.

Doesn't anyone else think they should have just remastered Morrowind instead? Either way, they really need to do a completely new engine or maybe make use of Tech 6, I'm sure they could modify it to support an open world.
