I picked this up last night after trading in battlefield. Never played an RPG before but this looked damn good......Started up as an orc.....lets see how this goes......

I'm eager to hear your tale as you progress. You will probably approach the game drastically different than I am and that interests me.

Don't be discouraged because the game is so huge. It is the opposite of linear.

Hey, what's the best platform to play this on? I've got my PC and my PS3, plus my roommate's BF has a Xbox 360.

I don't know about performance, but the 360 does get the DLC earlier if that is a big deal. It isn't for me, but some people look at that as a bonus.

Thanks for all the tips! Anyone wanna suggest some good perks for a spellcaster Mage?

I would say just focus on the spell schools. Maybe level destruction a few times first. After about level 10 you will know pretty well exactly how you should distribute your points.

I'm on the 360, maybe 20 hours in now. I've had two bugs: a freeze of the system a few hours in, and then today entered a house and half of it was water with no textures and some things that kept falling through the floor. Left the house, came back in problem fixed. So, not bug free, but I've played some buggy stuff in the past and this is not what I'd call a buggy game at all. Daggerfall was literally unplayable out of the box when I bought it back in 1997, even after several patches. This game is more stable than Fallout 3 was out of the gate.

The game does play in many ways like Fallout 3 with its content ripped out and replaced. However, it's a bit more polished. The menus work well, the leveling system is very nice as well. I enjoyed Fallout 3 more only because I much prefer its genre to fantasy. Also I have to say I love the VATs system in F3. I've always struggled to enjoy RPG games with real-time combat, and Fallout 3 handled that exquisitely.

All in all a great game, it's hard to criticize it. It's truly extensive, and even things that in other games may have been irritating filler, like alchemy, I actually spend some time on. I'm willing myself away from the main quest line more than I have in other games just so that I can spend more time breaking into houses and things. Like F3, there are occasionally people with a contract on your life, but I was impressed at one point to see the contract no an assassin's body put out on me by a homeowner because I had actually robbed their house before.

The graphics are ok. I don't have a newer gaming rig (PC), so I don't know what I'm missing, but the 360 is what 6 years old now?

I've seen reports of some bugs on the ps3 causing bad choppiness as characters progress to higher levels.

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/326411/skyrim-ps3-players-report-crippling-lag/

I posted similar findings earlier in the thread. Right around the 25 hour/5mb mark, my frame rate issues began. Seems like it'll only get worse as the game goes on too.

Part of me isn't so sure it'll get fixed either. Seems as though people had the very same issue with Fallout 3, and Bethesda was never able to fix it. And they had to have known it existed in Skyrim, yet they released it anyway. Maybe they were forced to release on 11.11.11, and hoped to get the patch out before anybody got hit by the bug. I have my doubts that it will be fixed completely on PS3, and the whole thing has me very close to buying a 360 on Black Friday and trading in my PS3 copy.

Everybody was expecting bugs, and hopefully they can squash them all, because as of now, neither platform has a perfect copy. Which is really unfortunate, because Skyrim is probably the best video game I've ever played.

Is fire, ice, or lightning the best type of destruction magic? My Mage is level 9 and kinda sucks. I've out all his points into magicka and honestly have no idea what to do with my perk points. Should I invest them in the three diff types of destruction magic or just focus on one and dual cast? I STILL am using flame and spark lol...

P.S. The game breaking PS3 bug is slowly ruining my game. About 4.5mb/save file.

RebelCapitalist on the PC forum made a really good post that will probably help answer your question:

I'm level 30ish pure mage and just rolling through people. At one point I thought I had made a mistake, but then I read a post elsewhere about how to make sure your mage takes no prisoners.

My destruction was also lacking because I ended up becoming a conjur/resto mage to survive. But then I did what's below and am tearing it up.

One thing that helped (didn't believe at first) was that Magicka regen is far, far, far less important than the bonuses that reduce the cost of spells. Your magicka will regen like crap in combat no matter what. However, if you have a good amount of reducing benefits, you can cast and cast and cast.

The main step was getting enchanting to 100. You want the 5/5 initial benefit, Insightful enchanter, Corpus Enchanter and Extra Effect perks.

You'll want to disenchant something with a destruction bonus on it to get Fortify Destruction.

Enchant a ring, circlet and necklace with Fortify Destruction. Once you're at 100 enchanting, these pieces will really rock.

Put your perks for Destruction into Shock 2/2, the usual adept/etc, Dual Casting and Impact (nice).

For leveling, keep choosing Magicka until about 300-350 base then go health. Also, get health on 1-2 pieces of your gear.

Get the spell Chain Lightning. Dual cast it to send your enemies into oblivion. Once I did these changes and started dual casting, my destruction took off. Took me like three days to go 50-51 before this. After, I went to 75 in a handful of hours.

Should point out that the Impact effect works on dragons. Without any real magicka regen on me, I'm having no trouble. Took on 8 guards at once last night and the battle lasted about 30 seconds I think. My magicka bar was still plenty full for more.

In short, do your stuff right and being a pure mage is plenty fine for blowing through stuff. BTW, my armor is the arch mage robe and some 0 or 1 armor items. Don't need it.

Yeah, I saw that too. I really don't want to buy the XBox version, as it's not my XBox, so I guess that means I'm getting it for PC.

Load times on the PC are much faster, which is a huge plus if you like to fast-travel/visit houses frequently. There's also mod support, better graphics (if your PC can handle them), etc.

Apparently you can transfer your save files from the XBox360 to the PC according to this article.

Finally, speaking of carrying capacity, is there any way to increase this besides the Steed Stone (which I already have, and it isn't enough!)?

There's a perk at level 50 pickpocket called "many pockets". It gives you 100 bonus capacity. And leveling pickpocketing is really easy, sometimes I get two levels from the same person if they have valuable items.

The thieves' guild also gives you a chest armor that has +35 to carrying capacity.

Every point in stamina gives you +5 in carrying capacity.

Not sure what else there is besides the stone.

I saw that the other day. I really hope they can bring the PS3 version to a steady 30 FPS like the 360 version. I have a hard time believing it's going to be a perfect fix, as this is the same bug that plagued Fallout 3 and New Vegas. I'm on the fence about purchasing a 360 and another copy of Skyrim, as the 360 version seems to have the least bugs. I'm about 48 hours in, and I'd be some pissed if I spent all the time leveling a character that will essentially become useless. Here's to hoping though.

So how does this favorites system work (ps3)? Is there any better way to switch magic/weapons than continually going into the magic/items menu?

Add an item to your favorites, and then activate the favorites menu by pushing up or down on the dpad.

With all these large save issues, I'm glad that I've been taking my time looking around this game. I'm at level 11 and my file is only about 5mb.

The ps3 issue sucks. I've been tempted to get this for ps3 since I have pretty much 0 games I play for it. I'd rather save single player games for ps3 and possible multi games for xbox, this is killing it.

I'm level 42. My save file is about to breach 10mb. The game stutters a little when I first get to towns, but other than that there are no issues. The lag is way overstated. It is not game breaking.
