I am against reparations in any form. I would not want to pay for something I didn't do, and using the Native Americans as an example, the more that is given to any group in society the more pathetically incapable of functioning that group becomes (again, like a spoiled child). The absolute last thing Blacks need right now is to have money thrown at them because of their race, just when they are really becoming more successful.

Don't we already throw money at black people (welfare, healthcare, other social programs to help the "needy")?

OP, please give a direct correlation on how slavery still affects black people in America? All your 5 points are actually meaningless, unless you show an example most people here including me will assume this is just the same old excuse black people use time and time again. I don't get what you are trying to say, are you merely pointing out something obvious like "Racism still happen to black people"? Racism and inequalities are indeed still prevalent today but that does not happen only on black people. It happens to ALL minorities.

The problem today is attitude. We should get rid the mentality that it's cool to act like a thug and it's all about the bling bling :disgust:

Not all. Some are refugees, some came over when they were slaves in their own country being captured, starved, and murdered during colonialism. Children born here don't voluntarily decide to come here.

America is still a long long way from racial equality...it doesn't matter if your really educated, you are still at a disadvantage when finding work, moving up the social ladder etc. The truth of it is humans will always judge by looks sadly...not just skin color either, fat people and old people are also discriminated against.

like what chris rock said..."Everyone wants to be a n***a but no one wants to be a n***a". (i think that was chris rock right?)

Why are there so many black single parents? Maybe they should stop producing so many kids if they can't afford them or don't want them.

The vast majority of the responses in this thread are simplistic answers to extremely complicated and sophisticated issues. I honestly don't think many of you actually understand the issue and are afraid to admit that maybe the playing field is not equal for everyone because it would require you to confront something most people are not ready to deal with. The "pull yourself up by the bootstraps" argument is trite and condescending as an entire culture that was repressed for 400 years cannot just "lift itself up" overnight. Many of you unknowingly are stereotyping an entire race with that argument. Essentially you are saying that on the whole, Black people are just being lazy and using racism as a crutch and that if they really wanted to they could succeed. This is much the same racist attitude that has been around since slavery ended even as the country was segregated and blacks were treated as second class citizens who didn't share the same rights that everyone else had for most of the 20th century. The civil war ended a very long time ago, institutional and official segregation only 40 years ago. Racism is still around (both overt and the discrete form many of you are unknowingly propagating). So essentially Blacks have only been legally "equal" for 40 years and yet many of you expect that somehow the entire culture and race should have elevated itself to be on par with the rest of society in just 4 decades. Unfortunately (and this thread is testament to this) it takes a long time for attitudes and ideas to evolve and it just hasn't been long enough yet. I would encourage many of you to seriously research the topic and not just offer up anecdotes and vague observations.

Or that he just gave us quotes out of context and without citations.
When did Lincoln later tell people he was wrong for saying that? I'm genuinely unaware of such an utterance - can you provide a citation. If I'm ignorant of what I speak, please let me know ASAP so I can STFU.

Quotes...out of context? What kind of context would make those two statements mean something different? Maybe if he preceded them by saying, "Everything I say next is false."

Without citations? Oh, someone finally found me out. For years it's been my secret Internet hobby to create racist phrases and attribute them to beloved historical figures. Really, your scalpel has just dug too deeply and forced me to tell all.

Citations? Both quotes are found in: Damon Wells, Stephen Douglas: The Last Years, 1857-1861 (Austin, 1971), p. 105. Context? Back-to-back speeches from the Northern Democrat nominee Douglas and Lincoln, vying for the support of the people during a cross-country tour.

In an age of 'positive discrimination' where a black person is more likely to get a job because the company requires X% of employees to be non-white, regardless of which candidate for the job was actually best suited, and where it's absolutely fine to have MOBO's (way to integrate, there) and where if in any trouble the whole race card can be played, I don't think it's fair at all to say that blacks/non-whites have any kind of disadvantage at all.

Anyone who works hard can be as successful as any other person.
Saying you're 'opressed by the white man' or whatever is simply pathetic.

If your grandparents were poor, uneducated and a potential target for racism anywhere in the US I can assure you that it would have an impact on your life in some form or another.

My grandparents (3 of 4 are still alive) are all illiterate. However, they all busted their asses with long hours and little pay to give my parents a good life back in the Caribbean. Two generations later, myself, my sister and plenty of my cousins are all college-educated in America.

how it affected them.....

Exactly! My ancestors were brought to Guyana from India many years ago as indentured servants (aka slaves, but with a "new" wording, since slavery was "abolished") Slavery was abolished there about the same time it was for blacks in America. There were blacks in Guyana as well. I won't go into detail about which of these races still complain though....

Arkitech made a factual original post. Reasonable people can disagree about what if anything can or should be done, today, about these facts, but it isn't right to deny the facts as they are.

There are lots of residual effects of slavery in our society today.

And a lot of the most extreme effects began to change as little as 50 years ago, in 1954. Then in 1964 when the Civil Rights act was passed. That didn't mean the effects disappeared in 1964, that just means there was official acknowledgment things should change.

For some of you, 50 years probably seems like a long time, trust me, it isn't.

more examples of residual effects-

blacks are around 10-15% of the population, what is the % of blacks in states like Utah ? btw, the Mormon church forbade blacks from holding certain positions in their church until the 1970s. That is only one generation removed from today.

intermarriage between races was against the law in Alabama until the year 2000.

ding ding ding, and I don't blame my poorness on my ancestors, that's just people looking for an excuse to get a free hand. (Irish slaves) and strangely I've met more racist black people than racist white people.

That's a damn good point. I work with a guy from africa, he's been here like 9 years I think.

He drives an M5, and works his arse off. He also has a huge problem with american-born blacks for this reason.
