SLI Benchmarks

Hello all:

I have recently put together my SLI computer and have run a few HL2 benchmarks, trying to gauge performance compared to what I have seen on the net. So I was wondering if others with SLI rigs could post some of their HL2 scores with the settings they used and the config they have.

On a side note, I was also wondering if others experienced any slowdown at certain points in the game that seem rather odd. For instance, toward the beginning of the game when you are unsuccessfuly transported outside of Kliners lab, when I look at the large power plant like structure in the back there is some very noticeable slowdown. Yet in similar graphically intensive situations it is smooth as silk. Are there simply random areas that were not optimized as well or what?

Thanks.

From what I have seen most GT sli's get around 10K in 3dmark 05 granted both cards are OC'd.

Says the guy with NO RAPTORS...

Uh... But since you can't put 2 drives in RAID-5, LOL

Please post your results for benchmarks. I just want to see em.

Oh, and Nick, your rig is the best bang for the $$ out there.

you cant do raid 5 with 2 drives?

but if you read the anandtech review of RAID 0 raptors, i think you will agree that raid 0 is almost worthless, and its certainly not worth spending the extra money for.

as far as benchmarks, what would you like to know?

The silicon raid controller supports software RAID5 but its not certified (what ever that means)

raid 0 is worthless

that (Anand) article was debunked months ago because they didn't use an nforce board in any of the tests. Tech report had an article shortly after showing raid-0 tearing it up on an nForce3.

This is probably a stupid question, but does that ram work with that mobo? Thought it only took up to PC-3200? Am most likely wrong, but thought I'd ask anyway

Well the benchmarks I was specifically looking for was in HL2. I ran the timedemos (updated to version seven) from here at AT and my scores were lower than what they had but I am not sure what settings they had on for the graphics. All they indicate was 1600x1200 w/4xAA and 8xAnsio but you could get varied scores depending upon what other settings you have turned on/off.

Wrong; RAID 0 is not "worthless". RAID 5 is closer to being "worthless" for the home user; there are fewer scenarios where it makes sense. Also, you need at least three drives to use RAID 5!

It's for overclocking, it runs at PC3200 (DDR400) speed until he starts overclocking. It simply says that these modules have been tested stable up to PC-4400 (DDR550).

Nope, RAID 5 requires a minimum of 3 drives.

Like this:

HD0......HD1........HD2
bit............bit..........parity
bit..........parity.........bit
parity........bit...........bit

etc etc.

RAID 0 is the best performer but offers no fault tolerance Like RAID 1 or 5.
I myself have 2 36GB raptors in a RAID 0 config. FAST AS HELL.
But also keep in mind that I dont store any critical data on there. Everything is backed up to my server, and then backed up onto mag tape. Now thats fault tolerance!!!!.

OP: Very nice setup you have there. I didn't even know there was an Audigy 4 yet.
That rig should rip anything up on the planet when it comes to gaming. Congrats.

Nick, some of us do not have to read articles about RAID arrays. I have a good deal of my own experience with them. I know what is the best performer (RAID0) and the best for fault tolerance (Duplexed RAID5 with hot spare). You don't have to just run 2 disks with RAID 0 either. You can run as many as your controller cards can manage. RAID 0 is very far from worthless from a performance standpoint. I really don't care what Anand has to say about it.

But enough about RAID arrays, this is the video forum and the OP is showing off his mighty fine SLI setup.

Don't be stupid guys, RAID is not worthless at all. Good God you guys need a brain.

RAID-0 with 2 drives on a crappy motherboard controller with no cache memory is a waste. I agree.

You need more than 2 spindles to get a real advantage and a controller with some cache onboard to cache the RAID.

For SATA you need a 3ware or raidcore controller and 4 drives in RAID-0 will rule.

I have an Adaptec U320 2200S (512M Cache) Dual Channel RAID with 4xU320 drives at 15Krpm 16M cache in a RAID-0

Why is RAID-0 better? I'll tell you. With a good controller RAID-0 rules ass because it does not have to sync any mirrors, hince the increase in speed going from RAID-5 (who cares if it is slightly cached, no speed gain and RAID-5 does perity checking which slows her down.) Bench it yourself and you will see the same.

RAID-0 rules for the enthusiests out there. If your poor? Your SOL

My HDD solution was $1600.00
