1) If it has Firewire 800, then no.
2) If it does NOT have Firewire 800 then yes.
3) The ones for sale now at Apple do not have Firewire 800, and thus DO boot into OS 9. ie. Apple is selling the OLDER model G4 now, instead of the latest revision. I suspect the reason for this is because of people who still need to run Quark 5 or older music software or something.

Why do you want OS 9 anyway? What software are you running? I personally hate OS 9, but then again I don't run any software that requires it.

And I hope you don't plan on gaming either. The G5s are OK for gaming (but not as good as a 3 GHz P4).

Reasons are simple, thousands of dollars worth hardware and software. Thanks for the info though, it's the FW800 version so it will not be doing OS9. I would NEVER do any gaming on a Mac unless it surpasses the PC's for it : ) I've got my own group of inbred Barton systems...I mean homebred. I want to check out a G5 but it won't do what I need it to do either without throwing out all my sh!t. My PC's are doing all of my work now and I just had the opportunity to grab the DP 1.25 for real cheap so I considered the upgrade just to have a Mac lying around for testing purposes.

Use something thats optimized, OS x is the way to go.

I just set up one of those dual 1.25'ers for a customer today. One of the apps I installed - Photoshop 7 I think, I guess doesn't like OS X so when I installed it, OS 9 automatically launched. I assume you want OS X completely off.

Photoshop 7 does not support OS 9. You must have installed Photoshop 6.

I was under the impression that apple was out of dual boot, OS 9 capable G4's. We've had a bunch of customers complaining that they couldn't get them anymore.

It was definitely Photoshop 7 right out of the shrinkwrap. Maybe just the installer needed OS 9? <shrug>

Your customers are mistaken.

Apple started selling non-dual bootable machines with the Firewire 800 model G4s. Then they came out with the G5s and scrapped the Firewire 800 G4s, and went back to the dual bootable G4s.

This way they have the G5s for people who want new computers, and dual-bootable G4s for those who need to boot into OS 9.

To make a long story short, all the G4 Power Macs Apple makes now can boot into OS 9. Maybe they were talking about laptops or the iMac? None of the new ones can boot into OS 9. They support OS 9 Classic only, from within OS X.

OK I am wrong. Photoshop 7 IS supported in OS 9. It's Photoshop CS (aka Photoshop 8) that doesn't support OS 9.

Anyways, if a file was edited in OS 9, and you click on it, then it will launch the OS 9 version of Photoshop. The installer should work in OS X. Perhaps you installed the OS 9 version?
