It's a savings on the cost of an OS upgrade, as there was question on whether or not Tiger would ship on the low-cost machine. Look at the reviews on Tiger, then try and say it's not a hot deal when bundled with the lowest cost mac. I'm a PC guy and likely always will be, but its a hot deal.

This not a hot deal...of course a new machine is going to come with the latest Mac OS

ASSUME NOTHING momo,

There was uncertainty whether or not it would ship or if you would have to obtain upgrade CD separately.

I have purchased quite a few mac myself...they always ship with the newest OS...

the uncertainty comes from people that don't know what they are talking about.

Apple Stores are perfect for parties and gatherings. I've never seen a retail area with so much empty space and so few items to offer. You could line dance with a group of 20 down those aisles...

that said...I love myPod

Been using tiger.. 200+ changes = nothing noticeable..
Everything seems like a ripoff of open source.. they're losing my respect

That's not always correct - frequently old stock will not have the new OS/updates in the box, and you'd have to spend $20 for the up-to-date program to buy a copy of the latest media.

Nope, they don't all have copies. I bought a Mac Mini from Best Buy yesterday. I opened it up...no Tiger, just Panther. I'll have to pay $9.95 to get a Tiger disc. I'm disappointed, but it's not too bad.

Now if I can just fix this overscan problem I'm having by hooking it up to my 40XBR800, then I'll have a pretty nice monitor. As it is, I'm missing the Apple Menu and half of the dock, but it's still usable!

I don't know exact details, but there are programs you can run to change the video resolution output by the Mini's Radeon 9200. Google or jump to a Mac forum and you'll find a few programs to do that.

I suspect all or most Apple stores got 10.4 put on all but the oldest stock, whereas the non-Apple stores won't get it for a few weeks, and then only on new equipment.

Nothing new? Try searching for a file in the Finder or an email in Mail.app. Spotlight is great for locating data.

I have smart folders set up in the Finder to filter all .doc files and .pdf files and INSTANTLY I have access to all of these files.

Yeah, that's not nearly 200+ changes tho. They make it seem revolutionary when all they really introduced was minor fixes/additions + spotlight and dashboard (which is a lot like konfabulate). The stuff u can do in spotlight isn't much more than a spiffy search, useful at times, but most of the time not. I've been using quicksilver which is great for launching apps.

If you aren't good at locating data, Spotlight is a godsend. It all depends on how you work. If you mostly load applications, rather than open data files, Spotlight doesn't have many obvious advantages over QS. However, if you're data-centric, SL has huge, obvious advantages. It all depends on how you work - and I suspect that most people will begin to use cmd-spacebar (and Spotlight) a lot in the coming days.
