Stanford Dish Rescue

Many of you know that I've been involved in the Seti@Home project(searching for ET) for a while, and am also now involved in the Einstein@Home project(searching for pulsars).

In both cases, it is radio-astronomy equipment that makes those projects possible. I urge you to consider signing the online petition to preserve the (5) 60' dishes currently at Stanford. The site has been scheduled for demolition!! Friends of Bracewell Observatory wish to save this facility to help promote a "teaching observatory" for both students and the community. This can be a very valuable resource to the radio-astronomy community.

I ask you, please, to consider at least signing the petition and voicing your support.

Thank you,
Rich

If there are volunteers who want to keep the dishes, if there is no scientific or educational program that needs the space, if the dishes can be repaired and used - why trash them? They can still do science and exist!

signed, #300.

Don't feel bad, Peter. I signed in at #30, and it took me a while to realize posting in the DC forum at Anandtech might be a good idea too.

LOL, networkman

A friend once said - and I think he was quite wise - :

You know that fighting stupidity is very hard and often futile.
But fighting one's own stupidity is harder, although sometimes not as futile ...

I don't know if he quoted someone ...

See me @ #330

BTW, I just noticed this while looking around the site:

August 10, 2005

To all rescue effort supporters,

*** The demolition has been halted! ***

We contacted the Santa Clara County Planning Office, who checked yesterday
and discovered that Stanford does not have a demolition permit. Therefore
demolition cannot proceed any time soon. Any new permit request is going
to be subject to County historical/environmental review.

We sent an offer yesterday (via overnight delivery) to the President of
Stanford, John Hennessey, to fund the restoration and operation for the
benefit of Stanford faculty and students in exchange for a lease. This
approach would accomplish our aims and at the same time absolve the Dean
of the School of Engineering of any future responsibility.

On the media front, an article about the rescue effort will be appearing
in the San Jose Mercury News, possibly in tomorrow's edition, by science
writer Dave Herbert.

We also received favorable coverage this past week in The Wave Magazine
(http://www.thewavemag.com/pagegen.php?pagename=article&articleid=25404)
and the Palo Alto Daily News (Aug 3 edition).

Best wishes,

Bob

I've been in contact with Bob Lash, and while this is good news, there has been no word yet from the President of Stanford, John Hennessey, as to the status of the offer.

Therefore, we must remain vigilant and keep the signatures coming. Only once the ink is dry on a deal will it be time to relax a little... right before the real work begins.

Edit: And we're up to 375 now.
