At last.....found a way to do it.

Make sure you have

Windows 2000 Network Service Pack 1

Windows 2000 boot file....put this in a temporary directory, not the Win2K directory; or use boot.bin from this file if you end up with the error message "NTLDR Missing" after burning.

and CDRWIN.

Copy the entire contents of the Win2K CD to a directory, x:\Win2K.

Extract the service pack files using sp1network.exe -x and extract to a directory x:\sp1.

Slipstream update the Win2K installation files using update -s:x:\Win2K.

Make sure you have the cdrom_sp.tst file in the Win2K directory.

Run CDRWIN and go to File Backup and Tools (the button with the wrench).

Set the Operation to "Record Directories/Files directly to an ISO9660 Disc (on the fly)".

Add the x:\Win2K directory, include hidden and system files, recurse subdirectories, Joliet file system. Make sure that PRESERVE FULL PATHNAMES is unchecked.

Go to Advanced Options and give the CD a volume name, ie Win2K_SP1.

Click on the Bootable Disc tab.

Make Bootable Disc checked.

Media Emulation type as Custom.

Image File Name, point to where you put boot.bin.

Developer Name as Microsoft Corporation.

Load segment as 07C0

Load sector count 4.

Click OK and burn away!

I did this about a month ago, great tip. It's really convenient to have everything installed at once, and on top of that, make it bootable.

Andy!

You are going to make me wet myself! Stop it!

Does anyone know what needs to be done to make the boot_sp.tst and boot.bin files? They seem to hold the key.

I think that link automagically selects the server that is closest to you. Try getting that 7AM your local time.

so slow
I had the same problem when the initial 80 meg service pack one came out. I never thought to save it, because of microsoft's update site. But, it's going at 1.6kb/sec on my cable modem. The bandwidth is pretty open tonight, and everything else i've tried has downloaded fairly fast.

Andy, thanks for the great tip! I've been intending to research this soon and prepare an updated CD, now you've saved me a lot of work. This sort of thing has been my latest computer-related task...I just finished a CD which has three bootable images. The first is a general menu-driven Win98 boot disk that includes selectable IDE drivers and SCSI managers. The second and third are PowerQuest's PartitionMagic v6 and DriveImage v4, respectively. Just select the one you want at bootup...very convenient and much faster than fiddling with diskettes. The remainder of the CD has the Win98 installation files and a ton of "essential" utilities (WinZip, OS updates, image/audio/video viewers & editors, DirectX, FTP, Web, CDR, etc).

Maybe now I can do one for Win2k. Thanks again!

[edit] Looks like this is a popular subject. You guys must be hammering TheTechGuide's server looking for the boot binary, I can't get it to respond right now!

> "Does anyone know what needs to be done to make the boot_sp.tst and boot.bin files? They seem to hold the key."

SUOrangeman, I don't know off-hand, but I've been doing some reading on this subject so I'll let you know if I learn how to build the binaries. While I haven't seen anything to directly confirm or contradict it, it appears the boot.bin file doesn't have to contain anything so long as it is 2048 bytes in length ('zero' filled) to fulfill the El Torito specification. In fact, the boot images I've built recently use precisely this dummy BIN file, and they work perfectly. Nonetheless, I am interested in the file structure because it appears it may be where messages may be stored that are displayed during bootup, and/or pointers to additional binaries. [/edit]

Best regards,
Floyd

SUO: cdrom_sp.tst should have been created by the slipstream process. It's a file of 0 length anyway, so if the unification doesn't create it, you should be able to create it yourself.

Give me a PM if you can't get your hands on boot.ini.

Excellent topic. I'm going to research and try and find a way to load in a custom installation script to preconfigure all your settings during the install.

Excellent. I created the CD and it worked perfectly.

One important step you need to take. I ruined two CDRs because of this. In CDRWIN there is an option you select after choosing your win2k directory to create the CD. The check box is PRESERVE FULL PATHNAMES, uncheck this box otherwise it will just burn a win2k directory folder onto your CDR.

Thanks a bunch.

Same error as inicated below:
Boot from ATAPI CD-ROM:
No Emulation
BOOT: Couldn't find NTLDR
Please insert another disk

Should this disc be made from OUTSIDE of Win2K operating system? Made mine while in Win2K.

Just for the record, I'd highly recommend using CDRWs as I doubt that SP1 will be the last one. That and SPs are cumulative.

Download and place the boot.bin file in a temp directory, NOT THE DIRECTORY WITH THE WIN2K FILES. Placing the boot.bin file in the same directory with your win2k files will result in a nonbootable disc.

Place the boot.bin file in c:\temp for example. Then load the boot.bin file into the advanced options stated in CDRWIN.

Thanks AndyHui for this great information. I followed the your instructions and every thing went smooth. The only problem is that when I set my PC to boot from the CD I get the following message...

Boot from ATAPI CD-ROM:
No Emulation
BOOT: Couldn't find NTLDR
Please insert another disk

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, Mitch

That message indicates that you didn't properly add the boot.bin file.

The boot.bin file should not be in the WIN2K directory that you select to add the the CD.

Check the CD contents, is the boot.bin file on the CD?

No, mine doesn't show up and it was not in the 2K folder on the hard drive. Did you make yours while in 2000?

Just follow what setaanbomb said.....don't put boot.bin in the Win2K directory....just point to it as I have instructed. It doesn't matter if this disc is made in Win2K or not.

Andy, thanks but I have followed your instructions to the letter and so far have made 3 discs that will not boot. Get the previously mentioned error each time. The boot.bin is located outside the 2k folder and is added exactly as you've indicated.

I've got to be doing something incorrectly, but darned if I can see my own error.

Put in the bad CD you created, check the contents of the CD with Explorer.

What does explorer show as the contents?

It should not show a WIN2K folder.

Well, add me to the list of unsuccessful attempts. I just burned the disc and the directory structure is precisely as it should be, but attempting to boot from the CD yields a "Couldn't find NTLDR" error.

All files are there and there's no Win2k folder or boot.bin on the root, just as it should be. I'm giving it a whirl with Nero right now, I'll let you know how it turns out.

[edit] Nope, it failed as well. The only outward difference I see is that the original Win2k disc does not use the Joliet descriptor. Gonna un-tick that option and give it another try, will report back in a few minutes. [/edit]

Floyd

Make sure you have the following files in the root directory of your CD:

autorun.exe
autorun.inf
boot.bin
cdrom_ip.5
cdrom_nt.5
setup.exe

There's no boot.bin in the root directory, however it was specified in the advanced options all three times I created a coaster (and BTW, I have a legitimate license for CDRWin...I know Jeff has a reputation for making an example of pirated copies). From reading the previous messages, I understand that the file should be passed to CDRWin from a 'remote' directory, i.e. not from the Win2k folder, which is exactly what I've done. I wonder why it isn't being copied to the disc? Since CDRWin isn't adding it, I wonder if I should try inserting it manually.

Any idea WTF is going on?

Best regards,
Floyd

I just tried this, and CDRWIN told me it burned successfully, but viewing the contents of the CD just shows one 688,256KB file, ELDMI. Anyone know what I did wrong?

nevermind, it works. after restarting it's showing the contents now. it seems to have worked, although I can't check to see if it's bootable, my CD-ROM doesn't support bootable discs

but thanks! this should save a bit of time next time I format.
