Mounted the slk-800 with tt smartfan 2 on a axp2400 without any shim or pads, just put a layer of AS3 in between. Temperatures in the bios show anywhere from 56 to 63 degrees Celcius?! The heck?!
What motherboard are you using? Some motherboards display the temperature from the diode inside the CPUs core, which is quite a bit higher than the socket temperature most people are used to seeing.
Did you check to make sure the HS was not mounted too far forward on the cpu? It can happen easier than you think. Look at the board with the HS mounted and see if it is totally flat against the cpu. If it is too far forward the HS will ride up on the socket, making only partial contact with the chip.
I get 40C with an XP1700 on an ASUS A7V266C and a slow fan.
