SLK-800 Transportation question.

Just got it today, and gonna install later this weekend. Feeling it, it's mad heavy, is it ok for transportaion vertically? or should i lay the computer on its side when i transport it? I take the computer back and forth from school and to a lan party every now and again. Is there anyway to ease the load the mobo has to support?

i would seriously suggest removing the heatsink when you go to move the case. if an MCX370-C swiftech can break the lugs off the socket (which it can, i've seen it), then the SLK-800 certainly can, too.

Yeah, thats the bad part about a heavy heatsink.

Just like you said paco, lay the computer on it's side. Have the right side (when facing the front) laying on your car seat.

Hi Paco 83,

The Socket 462 on an ATX M/B is rated for only 300 grams for transportation purposes. The Slk 800 weighs in at 505 grams. So "normal" transportation could damage the socket and hence the MOBO. However, I said "normal". Normal like UPS, Fed-Ex, USPS, Mom and Pops, etc. I have the exact same cooler mounted on an Asus board. I have moved it several times with no problems. When I do move it, like you stated, I lay the case on it's side and transport it that way. This way the weight is distributed over the entire mobo and not just the lugs on the socket. One last thing. Since I put the system together, I used all of the standoffs for the motherboard to the case, 9 total I think. I've seen some motherboards placed in cases with only four standoffs being used. You may want to make sure the motherboard is securely and appropriately fastened. If you do take the cooler off, then like the other post stated, re-applying the thermal compound is a must. Cleaning everything well, getting good contact and not letting the screwdriver slip is the real pain in the a**.

Thanx for all ur help, i think i'll just stick to keeping it on it's side. Taking it off everytime i need to move it would be a pain, and i'm sure i'd screw sumtin up sooner or later

The heatsink weighs almost twice as much as AMD's recommended maximum, but it also grips three times as many lugs as a standard AMD heatsink I wouldn't worry about it if it were mine.

I'd recommend setting it on the side. while I don't think it's likely to break your mobo, I would be worried about it getting a little "loose" from making perfect contact with the die, therby giving you higher temps over time. however, taking the hsf off and reapplying it often will make your temps higher anyway, so don't do that.

also as3 takes about 3 days to reache its maximum performance. This is because it has to bcome absorbed into all of the microscopic crackes in the heat sink and the chip. just a little tid bit about that. also if you are going to be moving your computer alot i might consider replacing your slk 800 with an slk 900 because the slk 900 screws to the mp so you wont have to worry about breaking lugs. although i dont know ifi could bring myself to purchase a new heat synk after only 4 days so youl probly have to deal with 800. just be carful you probly got it figured out.

it has the three lug clip.. what's the chance of all 3 lugs breaking off? not much
i use the SK-7 on my epox 8k7a that has the middle lug broken.. just 2 lugs on there.. holds pretty well...
