Is a SLK800A with a smart fan ii enough to sufficiently cool a 2100+ XP oc'd??? (aiming for 2700+ speeds)

This is on an Asus a7n8x deluxe(rev2.0) board with ddr400 ram (mushkin).

practically everyone who is ocing the tbred B's is using a SLK800 and many people are using SFII, so to answer your question: yes

yeah I'm using the slk800 but with a panaflo L1A.....2.08 ghz at default voltage. It would probably go higher but I'm a lazy overclocker...it runs nice and stable there so i haven't touched it since.

yea, I was getting worried if I had picked the wrong fan to use to overclock since this is my first time building a rig specifically for ocing and I saw that a lot of people were using panaflos/deltas.

Just make sure that the Thermaltake is connected directly to the PSU not to the mobo fan header. This fan draws a lot of current.

I used to have a TT SmartFan2 on my slk-800. It was nice using the variable resistor to dial in a balance between temps and noise. And when I wanted to push a cpu to its limits I liked having the ability to turn it all the way up. This fan can push a lot of air.

its not the brand that matters (for the most part) its the cfm they put out that matters (vs a dBa level u liek...)

yah its more than sufficient

Thx for the tips, I'll remember to use the psu to power the fan. But have you tried sensor from the smart fan since you can't plug it directly into the mobo for monitoring?

time to watch those videos of how to apply AS3 and read up some more.

The fan kit comes with the adapter so that you can plug in the fan into the PSU while still be able to monitor the RPM at the same time. You'll know when you get it. Conversely I can sell u my old one PM me if interested!

Whats nice is that it can handle 2400mhz, but if I turn it back to 2200mhz (which I can do at 200x11 rather than 185x13) and drop the voltage down to 1.75v from 2.0v, I get 30c idle and ~40c load. With the TT smart fan turned down to half (which is quite reasonable as far as decibels go) I still get ~34c idle.

keep in mind this is with the SK7. SLK-800A will be even better.

I'm running a XP1700+ @2.3Ghz 1.8Vcore on a SLK800, Using a Zalman 80mm that has a resistor on it that reduces the CFM to around 20! and its working great, load temps rarely exceed 45-46C and its oh so beautifully quiet!

I would imagine just about any fan that pushes air would work fine,

My 2100+ is at 2300MHz, 1.725V. I have a Panaflo L1A (21dB, 24cfm) on my slk-800 with a duct that pulls cool air in through the side panel of my case. The cpu is at 36C under load.

weird...I have case 4 fans - 2 in and 2 out blowing and my cpu temp with a slk800 and panaflo L1A are like ~50C idle.
How the hell you guys get it to 30-40C range when oc'ed to 2.3ghz on xp1700??? Must be my panaflo fan u think? Or perhaps I ought to make a hole in the side of my case? Using an old antec sx830. Think my vcore is 1.7 on a NF7-S abit mobo @ 200x11.5 settings.

For one thing, different MBs read temps differently. Readings from the socket are usually lower than from the diode. I've even seen changes in temp readings with a new bios. So its not very accurate to compare with different MBs than your own. If your system is stable then you have good temps.
50C idle does sound a little high. Is your case clean and free of air flow restriction? Did you use a super thin layer of good thermal paste? Are you sure the heatsink is mounted right?

Well, it IS a NEW system in a new case and I reset my heatsink twice using ASII and both get ~ the same temps. Got rounded cables and everything. Just haven't updated the new abit BIOS as I though if it ain't broke, I ain't gonna touch it. But if it does kick my temp down by 10C, I'll definitely do it.

I have my smartfan on my mobo fan header, but it's running at about 80% speed (4200 out of 5200 RPM max, 6W maybe?)

my temps were around 39 C idle a few days ago with a slk800 and smart fan II, heat wave hits LA, temps jump to 50 degrees C during the day, in a few hours, it has dropped 4 degrees, but my case only has room for 2 case fans so tomorrow i'm gonna get a little fan, take off the side panel and point the fan directly into the case. Tornado my @$$, how bout 1000 CFM

EDIT: by 39 i mean about 30 as NF7-s reads 10 degrees higher than usual and by 46 i mean 36 actual

So the NF7-S mobo reads the temp 10C higher in the bios? I don't have a separate temp. reader to confirm the numbers, but if it's showing 50C when in fact it's 40C, I'm happy

ok I finally got the heatsink to clip onto the cpu and put on the smart fan II. Now I will plug the fan's power connector to the PS, if the fan's power is directly connected to the PSU, does my mobo (Asus Deluxe) have any control over the fan (speedwise)?

Does anyone use the temperature sensor included with it, if so where do you put it? I just slipped it in between the fins of the heatsink and it's in a vertical position hanging in the middle of the heatsink.

many people have used external temp. probes and have come to the conclusion that abit shows temps 8-10 degress higher. i havent checked the bios but hardware doctor shows temps to high, i'm sure it reports on the high side in the bios as well

i personally dont use the sensor but if you want to use it, slip it in between the fins and get it as close as you can to the base of the SLK800
