OK...a slocket...I basically buy one (do they sell one for slot 1?) and then put a socket proc (like a celeron) into the slocket? will it work on any motherboard.....

sorry for my ignorance and ineptitude.

Please educate me on the subject of slockets.

thanks

Slockets are for use only on Slot One motherboards. As you stated, you buy a socket processor, install it in to the socket mounted on the slocket, and then plug the whole assembly in to the slot on the motherboard.

One word of advice: buy a good quality slocket. My personal favorite is the IWill slocket, mainly because they always mount nice and snug in the slot. You do NOT want a slocket that has any "slop" (ie. moves) once it has been plugged in to the slot.

"slotket" isn't it?

As for this:

There are retainer clips for those things! The same as old celerons, I think. Back when PII's and Celerons were the same clock for clock (when PII's had 1/2 cache devisor), I built some small servers out of the damn things. Worked great, snug, survived shipping. Ahh, the days before FCPGA.

Actually the name used depends on the the manufacturer. I do think the Iwill is called Slotket and I think that is the one I have too. If it is that one it is very good because it allows for voltage and FSB adjustments on the slotket if desired. Kind of cool.

Right now I have a 366 MHZ slot celeron. It is using the crappiest HS ever, hardly touche sthe core, but it works without a fan. At what point wopuld I need a better HS (no fans)? I am looking slotket and faster celeron. What do you guys think?

Thanks

Slotket = slocket, like someone said, it's a matter of verbage from the manufacturer.

As for you Agg123456789, for us to give you any decent recommendations on what to do, we'll need to at least know what motherboard you are planning to use.

One thing's for certain, if you want Intel, there is no use to wasting money on a Celeron when a Pentium 3 can be had for just a little bit more.

I have a Compaq neoserver and i want to run win2k on it rather than the propritary OS that it came with. Here is where the problem lies....no where on the board does it give a manufacturer ... i have no idea what i am dealing with....well not really true... i know that it is a 66 mhz system bus, and that it cannot be changed....and i know that it had a Celeron 366 in it before...abd i know that it has an ATI Rage LT PRO on board videocard.... and i know is that the Intel Northbridge says:
Intel
AGPset
FW82443EX
L847ID11
SL2SA
INTEL © '96

The Southbridge says:
Intel
PCIset
FW82371EB
L9020259
SL37M
INTEL © '98

There appears to be a model number on it however i dont know what company manufactured it so it seem rather useless...never the less...here it is:
PCB-2MB266MB-41C-VER1.0

if anyone can help on the boards identity it would be greatly appreciated....

thanks

Your board has the Intel 'EX' chipset. Yes, it is 66 MHz FSB.

The EX was produced around the same time the LX was.

The last EX board I saw was made by Intel and called the 'Maui'. It had basically the same configuration you describe. ATI onboard video. Does it have two DIMM slots? May be an OEM Intel board Compaq put in your box.

MU440EX might be it. I built two 'puters with this type of board a couple of years ago.

This is a hunch, but check this link carefully to see if the board layout is the same. I think Shuttle made EX boards as well.

Does the board have a number anywhere on one of the edges with PBA or AA?

Link

When Intel makes them OEM, they add and subtract certain components for OEMs. Therefore, your board may be the Maui, but without USB......... which makes no sense.
