Thnaks for the quick responses on the VPN ports. I will try my luck again ;-)

I am using a Windows 2000 Server as a VPN server. I am going though a Linksys Router and a cable modem. The Server is put in a DMZ. We are using PPTP.

The client also goes through a Linksys router and a cable modem. He is getting connected, but the the VPN connection is incredibly slow. Tried to download a 1MB file, and gave up after 10 minutes and 600k. I hadn't expected it to be flying but I certainly had hoped for better performance than this. Any suggestions?

With that router and the latest firmware you shouldn't need to put it on the DMZ.

I would suspect the routing and the server side if your connection is normally pretty good. What VPN software are you using? Is it a recent release? How fast is the machine? Is it running other big processes while you are VPN'ing? How big are the keys? What's your normal bandwidth like? What's the relative bandwidth reduction? What's the latency to the server you are connecting to?
These are mostly questions for you to answer personally, not post publicly.

If you are running an older obsolete VPN version, you could be encountering some version mismatch problem between the server and the client.

The machine needs to be fairly nimble to run strong VPN. If you have a slow machine this could be the problem. On a similar note, if the machine is processing something massive (like a 3D FEM simulation ) this will have the same effect.

If the bandwidth normally isn't that great - 128k ISDN for example - then using big keys (2k, for example) could choke the bandwidth.

If the server is overloaded, the latency is really bad to the server, or your connection is routing through some marginal nodes you could end up with the symptoms you are seeing.

I am running a Duron 750MHz with 256MB RAM. Nothing else was running at the time. While it is not the fastest, I just can't imagine the computer being the bottleneck. The client is running W2k Proffesional on a 600 MHz machine.

My cable downloads using are running at 800 MBits/sec. Uploads surely slower.

I am using the builtin VPN provided with Windows 2000 Server. Microsofts is probably not the fastest, but again I can't imagine it being THIS slow

Seems there must be a configuration problem - just don't know where to start (and I am by no means a pro at this)

For Chatterjee: To set it up I simply ran the Remote Access wizard (Notice this is a w2K SERVER). Reduced the suggested 100 virtual ports to 5 and then 1 (but it didn't make a difference).

HI my friend is having simular problems with the Linksys Router,
with Winblows 98se VPN is very slooow,router set with ppoe enabled,block one disabled,ip sec and pptp pass through enabled,port 1723 channel 2 ip assigned computer as well as protocol 47, have read that manually setting maxmtu value to 512 will help as well as enabling the dmz does anyone have experiance with this TIA




PS. if anyone can recomend a better router i will gladly buy it!

Could my problems have anything to do with the fact that I am using the router as DHCP server?

I figured that may explain why forwarding doesn't work for me.. (It says you have disable to disable DHCP for forwarding to work - ehh...)

You set up VPN server by enabling Routing and Remote access under administrative accessories, to allow a client access you set that up in the Active directory under the properties of the user. Very easy to do.

Port-forwarding needs a static IP or target to connect too.

The cable modem upload cap (128Kbit) effectively limits my VPN connection speed to about 8k bytes upload. So check your cable modem bandwidth first before jumping to any conclusions.
