Slot DVD Drives....

Who makes the better slot loading DVD Drive?

Pioneer 106s or the AOpen DVD-1640 Pro-A

or is there another slot loading dvd drive I should know about?

I think Pioneer used to make the Aopen drives, but I'm not sure it's still the case.

Anyways, if they're not the same, get the Pioneer.

Pioneer is a great company to buy from. (another vote for the pioneer).

I once had a 10X DVD Drive from Pioneer that was acting up... so I called up Pioneer technical support and I bitched about it... and they sent me a new drive, no problems whatsoever... great customer service

I don't know about anyone else in here, but I have a Pioneer 6X DVD-ROM I bought over two years ago and it is running great with no issues with the loading mechanism. For me the fewer moving parts means a lower failure rate and the tray loaders need an awful lot of moving parts to work. Just my thoughts. I will also vote for the Pioneer, but my experience with Aopen has been very good as well. Sounds like they are basically the same drive, so get whatever's cheaper. As for benefits, the best thing to me is that there are not two trays on my PC to get in each other's way when both are ejected (like at the end of an on-the-fly burn). I really like it that way.

I also have a 2 year old Pioneer Slot drive that works perfectly and not giving me any problem. Slot drive is not only for good looking, it is very convinient too. I could switch cd/dvd faster than tray.

It is possible though that many people having problem with slot because they push the CD/DVD to hard when inserting them on the drive. My car cd player is also slot and it's 5 year old player and works like a champ

I have a Pioneer 6X DVD-ROM too and it's still working fine, the only issue I can think of is when playing DVDs it seems to make more noise (because of no tray cover?)

Got Pioneer 106S recently from newegg.com.
Had also choice of Toshiba and Lite-On - decided on Pioneer.
Slot load is really cool, high rip speed, little noisy when starts.
Really happy so far.

From what I've heard, slot loads are less likely to scratch cd's. I have a pioneer 106s and like it a lot.

Can you use those fancy little CD-R in slot load? like the small CS-Rs that r creditcard size.

Jittos, yes you can. I've done it before, it's a little difficult on taking the disc out though.

Another vote on Pioneer. I have it and I love it!

if the pioneer could read subchannel data like most others on the market I would buy it. This is the only big flaw of the drive IMO.

Am I the only person in the world that has the AOpen? Oh well, it doesn't matter, because the two drives are exactly the same from what I heard. I got the Aopen because I was buying most of my junk from NewEgg.com, and thats what NewEgg sells...
