does it matter if the DVD drive is slot of tray besides preference? i read somewhere that the slots weren't that great but i wasn't able to find specific people/reason/events to further that claim
thanks for any input... specifically looking at pioneer slot or tray (maybe toshiba but the 12x tray i have isn't that great...)

Not really any performance differences, just get what you like best. If your looking for a new one I recommend Pioneer 116 or 106.

I bought the 16X DVD TOSHIBA SD-M1502 (tray loading) from Newegg.com for $58. I am very pleased with it, as well as the service from Newegg. I just checked the website and it is now $62, and out of stock.

I just got the pioneer as well and couldn't be more happy--and the slot loading has a good part to do with that. I swapped my cd writer out of the top bay and into the second, so I can change both discs at the same time, and every time I do, I say %@$@ that's convenient--so it's well worth it to hunt down a slot loader in the case of DVDs. (I'd rather a tray for CD's, in case I ever get my hands on the mini size CDR/Ws).

I have the Pioneer 106s and the only thing I've noticed is that it can be particular about burned media sometimes. When that happens I just pop it in my plexwriter. But otherwise it is great. Plays DVD's flawlessly, plays all manufactured CD'S and most burned CD's as well.

It's realy just a matter of convienience. The quality of the slot load player is good. Plus you can hope the lifespan of the unit would be longer, since there is no tray to break.

thanks for the replies, especially about being specific to which ones you guys have...
But whats this about slot being louder? is it just when it ejects or something, or is it overall noise coming from the drive? how much more noticable is it... i heard the toshiba ones are really quiet... but leaning more towards pioneer, wanna try out a different company...

The noisier effects of a slot loader occur when the disk is 'getting up to speed' or loading. When its reading the CD there shouldnt be much of a difference. I have a tray and my brother has a slot and I would take his over mine any day of the week. Slot loaders are so sexy...

I don't think that my Pioneer slot-dvd drive is louder than a tray drive, it's actually less loud than many tray cd-rom drives I've heard. And the noise they make isn't that high, you probably won't be able to hear it because your cpu fan (and / or other fans) is louder.

Caddys for DVD drives? Never heard of them. They did away with caddys after cd drives hit 4x or 6x if memory serves me right.
