Slow boot after auto exec??

On reboot, I get to autoexec and 'xxxx,network, nuts and bolts,etc.'

Then it just C:> prompts for a long time before opening windows blue screen (10 to 15 secs maybe) The only thing in my config.sys is c: win/setver.exe (short version)

Sometimes the blue screen comes up, with cursor(active) then auto reboots, including scandisc.....not all the time, just some times.....I've had it 'auto re-boot' from that first window as many as 5 times...then it goes on like nothing ever happened???

Need a little/lotta help here!!!!

Have you tried bypassing your start files by holding F8 to get the boot menu? Bypass autoexec.bat and config.sys this way, OR, use a startup disk and go to c:\ and rename autoexec.bat and config.sys to something else, like autoexec.org and config.org. See how it boots then normally.

Post the contents verbatim...every space/letter of your autoexec.bat and config.sys files here if you still have problems.

OK, well, that's progress. By the way, as I understand it, "setver.exe" is already incorporated by Windows 9x into the file "io.sys"...in other words, you don't need it to load in config.sys.

Otherwise, now, boot to Windows and click Start. Then click Run. Now, type in "msconfig" and click OK. When it appears on your desktop, click the "Startup" tab on the right. Now, list ALL the programs that have checkmarks next to them there so we can see what's goin on with your slow boot.

Defintely rem that setver.exe out...run the scandisk while you're at it, and defrag.

Are you using a sblive?

I went from a sb pci128 to a sound blaster live value and it added a good fourty seconds to my boot up time. Shows that C prompt seemingly forever. I never took the time to figure it out though now I hardly use 98. primairly use 2000 now.

Just a suggestion.

Sound blaster live = Sound card. I guess you don't have one.

Problem must lie elsewhere.
