Slow CD and DVD Burning

I hope i can get some ideas on why my machine takes so long to burn CD's and DVD's.

The machine is an P4 3ghz, 2gb ram, Gigabyte KNXP m/b, 1x 80 gb WD 8mb cache hdd, 4x SATA 120gb seagate hdd, leadtek TI4200 AGP, LG 52x52x24, lg 16x dvd rom, Sony 500AX (4x) DVD+-R).
OK heres the problem, when burning a vcd i set nero to burn at 24 times speed. As the discs are about 600-700mb they should take about 5-7 minutes but they take 18-23 minutes.
The same speed differences occur when burning a dvd. At 4 times they take 30 min plus to complete. It should be about 15min.
I have tried copying the info to the HDD but does nothing to speed it up.I have tried re-installing the Nero and different versions of it.

Any ideas would be great.

Are the ODDs running in DMA mode?

To be honest I dont know. But thats one thing to look at.In win98 that was able to be controlled in device manager.Same for XP i assume??

Yes but in XP its enabled through the Primary/Secondary IDE Channels under "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers". If in fact they're in PIO and you change them to DMA and then they revert back to PIO, you might want to use Intel's drivers (if you haven't already) or a new IDE cable(s).

Funny you should mention IDE cables as i just installed new round type cables. I will revert back to the original intel cables.
I already am using the drivers as per the KNXP driver disk..
