Slow Computer

Hello,

I'm having some odd issues with my computer that I don't know how to diagnosis it. I built it around 3 weeks ago and have been using it without any problems. I just my Win7 64 bit OS the last few days and each time I do it the computer loads incredibly slowly. It used to boot up in around 20 seconds now it takes a few minutes and you can see the Windows logo actually moving slowly as it loads.

I started to play Witcher 3 which previously ran very smoothly and then now on occasion when I load it, it slows down to unplayable and the sound is crackly.

The only thing that I did prior to this issue, is update the OS so I assume it has something to do with that but not sure.

Not sure if this is the exact right forum or exactly what is needed for someone to help. But let me know if anyone can.

Thank you!

machine specs? Are you using a HDD or SSD? If HDD, check SMART data, with HDTune Free, or CrystalDiskInfo. If SSD, you can check the same, but also run a benchmark with CrystalDiskMark or AS-SSD.

Could also download a Linux Mint ISO, and burn it to a DVD or USB flash drive, and try to boot off of it, and see if it is likewise "slow".

If Windows is still in the process of installing updates, boot time can be slow during the shut down, restart process.

Witcher 3 can be anything from a bad driver to overheating.

But as VirtualLarry said, not much we can say without some system specs.

Thank you, I will try that to see if what the details are. My specs are in my signature (running the OS/Witcher3 off the SSD).

It has literally only happened when I update the OS via windows update but not all the time. I restarted it again later on and had no problems. So its not a consistent problem.

Have you installed the most recent firmware from the Samsung website on your SSD? I think there was a buggy one back in early May that caused some issues like this for some people.

Is there too many startup programs activated ? Go to system configuration by msconfig and check under startup. If many applications are ticked there, you may uncheck some of them and check the booting speed in next system boot. i5-4690K is 64 bit and there should be no problems in loading Win7 64 bit. Check the article below too.

Check whether the RAM modules are not corrupted. To check if the OS causes the troubles, you may use a light weight Linux bootable device to start your PC and check if it loads faster.

So I haven't encountered this problem again for about a month until today. And it coincided with Windows security update again. They installed the updates, I restated and the Gigabyte load screen and the Windows logo were insanely slow and took about 5 minutes to boot up (didn't show anything about Windows updates) when it normally takes about 30 seconds.

After it loads there doesn't seem to be a problem on the Windows screen but I tried to load Witcher again and its unbearable slow where even the mouse glitches, and you can hear crackling sound as well. I then restarted the computer a few times which sometimes get its going back.

It seems like this only happens with Windows updates, but I don't know why. Anyone have any thoughts? Anything I can run to test if something is wrong?

Thank you!

System specs.

That is EVO 840 only.

Do malware scans with scanners like Malwarebytes.

Edit: Use CCleaner to clean registry. I have seen registry errors do this around updates.

Open the event viewer, click on custom views then administrative events. Tell me which errors you're getting.

Also, applications and services then hardware events. If you got hardware events, that's bad.

I recently had my PC running like crud, very slow boot times, and as soon as I solved the error events in the log, my PC started running like new again. If you're getting some of the same errors I was getting then I can direct you to a fix.

Just a few services failing to boot or getting errors can dramatically slow down your boot times, and general PC performance.

There is another program I use called Advanced System care 8 which has a bunch of useful tools included, and most of its available in the free version.

Administrative has a bunch of errors/warnings but this is the only 1 from tonight
-Errors: Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80240020: Upgrade to Windows 10 Home.

Looks like it was trying to install Win10 which I have reserved, but not ready to do it.

These are some other ones from the last 2 days
-Warning: TCP/IP has chosen to restrict the scale factor due to a network condition. This could be related to a problem in a network device and will cause degraded throughput.
-Warning: The time service has not synchronized the system time for 86400 seconds because none of the time service providers provided a usable time stamp. The time service will not update the local system time until it is able to synchronize with a time source. If the local system is configured to act as a time server for clients, it will stop advertising as a time source to clients. The time service will continue to retry and sync time with its time sources. Check system event log for other W32time events for more details. Run 'w32tm /resync' to force an instant time synchronization.
-Warning: Name resolution for the name isatap.home timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded.

Application looks okay, I don't see services listed (security, setup and system are all good) and nothing is listed under hardware.

Those don't seem to be reasons that could be causing it but what do I know Let me know what you think

There is likely something else causing your problems.

I'd suggest you run not one, but several different malware programs. There are some free trial offers you might be able to take advantage of. I recommend Bitdefender. Avast has a pre-boot scan that works pretty well also. I recall a time where I had a bunch of java exploits on my PC, and the only AV that picked them up out of several I tried was Avast's pre-boot scan. I've been convinced of it ever since.

Also, this is a free emergency kit from Emsisoft that works pretty good. Go into safe mode with command prompt. http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/eek/
