slow download speeds on wifi

just got a new asus u81a laptop and the download speeds are super slow. less than 1mbps and meanwhile the upload speed is double that. windows says that i'm connected at 54mbps to the router. other laptops on the network work great... 11mbps down.

granted this is a new computer and vista is taking ages to download 41 updates... but it should not knock down my speed test from 11mbps to 900kbps. i even tried new drivers from the asus site.

the other thing is that when the laptop turns on the wifi doesn't automatically turn on. shouldn't this be automatic?

Try testing the download speed on a speed test site.

If Windows Update is actively downloading, it can absolutely knock you down to 1Mbps from 11. Not sure why that would be any different than any other thing downloading to your PC (unless you're using QOS that lowers Windows Update priority by its' port number).

i stopped the download and it only improved it by a little. i should be getting 11Mbps minimum. i was testing this using speakeasy, that's how i know the speeds are slow.

update: after hours of googling on intel 5100 I found a post that said to turn off afterburner in my router config. i did this and i can now get 8MPS down and 4Mbps up. good enough for now. it should be almost double that speed but i'll take 8M over 1M for right now. i'm sure there are additional settings i could tweak.
