Slow Games PLEASE HELP!!!!

I dont know whats going on ... about 6 months ago I updated my pc

i had p4 1.8....1gig of pc133 ram ... r9700 pro ,60 gig HD and and sound blaster live!
games use to run slow on that 2

So i upgraded my pc .. played for and thought it should be that way .. but people tell me that games should run much smoother then they are ... the frame rate is $hit

here are my specs


CPU - P4 3.0GHz

Motherboard - ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe

RAM - 512MB PC3200 DDR 400MHz Set in DUel CHANN

HDD - MAXTOR 160GB


VIdeo card - ATI Radeon 9700 Pro

Sound Card - Sound Blaster LIVE! 24-Bit


Please any help will be great!!! is there any program that i can use to see whats wrong? or to see how good my pc did in a test or something like that???

what games? and post your results. My bet is the 9700pro. You would have seen at least smoother game play.

well from the upgrade i saw some better gaming but about 2 months ago i bought new video card .. VGA 6800gt 256mb ... i installed it .. my scores on the 3dmarks looked ok .. there was a improvement in game but not that big ... my friend has almost same specs and same video card .. his game where GREAT! HL2 looked beautiful my HL2 with the 6800gt had about 25FPS on everything high my friend had around 45 FPS

do i need to download something? AGP or CPU drivers???

1) does your friend run the same screen resolution that you do, that could have a profound impact on framerates

2) you need more RAM, dude Grab a pair of Corsair ValueSelect PC3200 512MB modules and that will bring you up to 1.5GB.

3) here are some driver updates for you:

• Microsoft DirectX 9.0C (if you have Service Pack 2 for WinXP, then you already have DX9.0C)
• Latest Intel motherboard chipset driver package for your board
• Latest nVidia video driver package

4) also follow the directions in this file to perform a once-over antivirus scan, because malware can slow your system down too. If it detects anything, it'll report it in the C:\Report.html file and you can post the output here for a checking-out. Expect this scan to take some time if you have a lot of data. Its scanning window will vanish when it's done.

5) on your motherboard, you might try putting the SB Live! in the bottom PCI slot, and make sure the topmost PCI slot is vacant. Are there any other PCI cards besides the SB Live?

when i got the 6800gt i returned it after like 4 days ...i didnt want to 10 days (full refund) to end because people told me I need to buy more stuff


i didnt everything that you told me .. it still slow .... when i download the drivers from ATI site .. games runn even slow .. but when i get the MOFIDYED drivers like OMEGA and DNA
my game run alittle smoother

You're kidding right? Well, I may not be the expert around here but I started a thread at hardforum.com asking people to find the prices of Intel processors close to the socket 754 Athlon 3400+ (the 2.4 GHz model). Anyway, the cheapest Intel with comparable performance as that CPU on (I think it was Doom3 benchmark on http://www23.tomshardwar.com ) was $450 US more. Go minimum socket 939 3000+ Venice core.

Or, maybe run Spybot Search & Destroy, Ad-Aware, and Mcafee Freescan.
Your CRT monitor can also cap your frame rates.
