Slow-loading top ad

Maybe its just me and my slow internet, but the top ad loads about a second or 2 after the rest of the page loads. This may not seem like a problem, but it will shift the rest of the forum down the width of the ad, causing me to click on wrong posts because of the sudden shift. Is there any way to fix the top width so it doesn't shift? Most people probably don't notice it because they had AdBlock and such, but I am using Opera and don't have any ad-blocking software.

I believe the ad guys have implemented asynchronous loading, so that ad loads don't bog down the forums. This is generally a good thing, but I'm not sure anything can be done right away about the shifting.

I'm not a programmer by any means, but couldn't you designate a fixed height in that space where the ad would be so it doesn't cause the shift? (assuming all ads should have the same height).

(i'm misclicking links as well due to this issue )

That's what I've already suggested to the ad guys. So it's being looked into.

its still going on and its getting worse

No offense but things like this are what kill your ad revenue. I don't mind ads, I know they are necessary. But when they interfere with the usability of the site, they get blocked. The cherry on top is they are ads that don't even work on mobile. Just a big old empty box whose only purpose is to make browsing the forums frustrating.

TPTB are all aware. More we cannot do. I hate it and am constantly clicking on the wrong thing because the page jumps at precisely the wrong time. Frustrating and I wish I could train myself to wait that extra bit but I am failing miserably.

We're still working on this one. The solution is not as easy as I was hoping for, but it is going to be resolved one way or another.

Bring back the ad free subscriber system?

I'm with allisolm. I know it's going to happen and I try to wait, but apparently I can't remember to do it. I get mad but mostly at myself for forgetting again.

Please! If you can't resolve it one way, we'll take another - whatever it is. Just make it stop.

Its not even worth posting from my phone now. I either use my work desktop with ABP installed or my laptop with ABP installed. I hate using it but its the only way to make the forum usable.

I'd pay a dollar a month not to have that ad pop up. That ad is literally the worst thing about this entire forum.

These ads are driving me up the wall! One minute they're a sensible size and the next they're enormous like posted by HN. This gets amplified even more by the shifting problem.

Yesterday, I fired up IE on a system without Ad Block - now I am glad that I do not use IE on that system

Laptop screen was 1/3 filled with the top ad:thumbsdown:; only two posts were visible on the thread I was looking at.

The top ads have now started taking up half my screen. Bad move, Anandtech. I think I'll stop browsing here until I can get some ad blocking software installed. :/

Yep, what used to be maybe 1 out of every 20 page loads was some obnoxiously large add is now more like 3 out of 5 page loads will get one. Will be browsing with Ad-Block soon.

Ad-Block installed and forums are actually usable now without waiting 2 seconds for a page to load, and then another second for it to shift down half the screen. It's amazing how user experience impacting those things are.

yup. if they would just use ads that are adblock approved, we wouldn't have these issues and need to use adblock in the first place.

Now we're just getting trolled

1. A large fibrous poop.

But seriously I'm about to install a ad blocker as those larger ads move everything. I think slow loading ads are fine but the larger ads should go. I keep clicking on the wrong stuff.
