While browsing the network here at work, my computer seems to take awhile loading files and folders off the server...

Using IE to view webpages is fine, and so is downloading files from the web. There is no slowdown at all in that department...

But when i look around on our company server, it seems to sit there awhile (Sending light in the taskbar stays on, but dosent recieve anything). While its sitting there, anything that has to do with the network is in essence frozen for 30 seconds until it lets up, but the computer itself isnt frozen.

All the other computers in the office can browse the network at very fast speeds, but since mine keeps freezing up while browsing, it takes me forever...

Any ideas?

Have you contacted your IT people/helpdesk? They might be able to do or tell you something about your problem.

Our computer tech is an idiot.

I have no certifications and know a hell of alot more than he does...

BTW: were a small office with only 10 people...

Check your DNS settings (compare 'em to the other machines in the office). Your "primary" DNS may be missing or down, and it takes a while to fail over to the secondary.

If only the local LAN is affected I doubt it's a DNS issue. Might just be a crappy NIC. I've had NICS that did fine over a 10baseT connection (ie...internet) and bog down on the LAN with file transfers that you would expect to only take a few minutes. A swap out solved the problem.

Actually, DNS sounds like the most likely culprit. A ~30 second delay is the normal timeout for a DNS query. Windows 9X will always try to use DNS to resolve something, then roll to WINS or some other query. Check your DNS settings and make sure they are "normal".

What OS is this? Some other ideas..

What protocols do you have installed? Is it the same as everyone else? It is possible they all have NetBEUI set as their default protocol and you're using TCP/IP, which is causing the timeouts. Check this by going into the ADVANCED tab of each protocol and look at the checkbox next to the "set this as the default protocol" and make sure you're identical to everyone else.

Let me dig it up but i remember hearing a fix for this for either 98se or xp.. not sure let me look it up.

*EDIT*- OK I found it, Its for Windows XP and it shows this:

Speed up Network Browsing

Open up regedit
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE//Software//Microsoft//Windows//Current Version//Explorer//RemoteComputer//NameSpace
Find a key named {D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}
Right click on it and delete it
Reboot !

DISCLAIMER; IF THIS SCREWS YER SYSTEM UP IT AINT MY FAULT
Had to put that^ in there hehe

BTW i got that off of http://xp-erience.org/

B node or Mixed sound like refrences to netbios name resolution.
In B-node resolution, the workstation broadcasts to resolve an IP address to a netbios name.
In mixed, it uses the WINS server to resolve netbios names, and falls back to broadcast if the WINS server
does not respond.
