Running Vista 64 Ultimate with 2gb for some reason it has become so slow (takes so long to start/shutdown). I disabled whatever services I could but it still dog slow.

that doesn't make any sense to me whatsoever. I am not the only one who have seen slow vista bootup issues

In my experience I reinstalled Vista many times because I tried to tweak it to much, the best installation I had was when I finally learned to leave it alone.

Did you disable the Readyboost service? If so, that's a good reason why your booting is slow. Readyboost also controls the ReadyBOOT service.

You could always disable Aero and then set the thing to be like Windows 2000 (disabling many of the effects) by doing:

Start > Settings > Control Panel > Classic View > System > advanced system settings > performance settings > adjust for best performance[/quote]

But taking AERO out of Vista, kills the point of having vista, might as well go back to XP or 2k if that is the case.

Vista is too resource hungry, Microsoft should optimize the code to make it use less resources.

in a way Vista reminds people of 95,98,ME

There's a fix you can install. It's called Microsoft Windows XP

All kidding aside, when all else fails, try a clean re-install, then apply the performance patches for Vista.

If you are going to use a 64 bit OS then you need better hardware. I suggest 4 Gb. You would think it would at least run on 2 Gb. The 64 bit version is very much different. 32 bit programs run in a virtual environment.

well technically speaking Vista only needs 1.5 Gb RAM to run "fast" relatively speaking, and 1 "Gb" to run at a mediocre speed (AERO + all eye candy enabled), and you can still boot and run like a turtle with 512 MB

sort of like what 256 MB was for XP

Turning off Aero generally is slower than leaving it on as far as CPU usage at least.

System restore to back before the problem began. I suspect you shut down some needed (or least benefical) services and one of the side effects is the slow start times.
