slow windows load

All of the sudden it takes a long time for my windows to load. With this system boot time was just a few seconds, then one day once it got to the blue screen it would take several seconds and then when it gets to the desktop another several seconds, well over a minute from the time you turn on the computer.

Is there some windows utility that can fix such problems? I can use my windows cd because it is older than sp2 so I would have to basically do a whole new install. I have never had anything like this happen. Any help?

I disabled my old hard drive that I have set up as storage and now it boots normally. How can I set up this drive not to slow down my boot time?

scandisk that old harddrive
scan for viruses on it/spyware etc
defrag it
perhaps put it on it's own ide channel

What are the hd's you're running?

it is a maxtor hd which has been formatted so there is nothing on it. my other drive is a wd sata drive. I am wondering if I need to change the jumper from master to slave. would that make any difference?

Similar thing happened to me until I changed my ribbon to utilize the full speeds of my IDE drive. It erased bottlenecks and works well with my P4.

yeah, it might be the ribbon that's slowing your HD's transfer rates (*could be

I also noticed that loading is twice as slow when I only had 256mb of RAM compared to 768mb RAM (Win XP)

but I still don't understand why it booted fine until I formatted it. As soon as it was a storage drive and not a boot drive, something happened.

Nate:

Do you have both drives on the same cable on either primary or secondary port ?

Nate:

P.S. If they are on SEPARATE ports/motherboard connector you can have both pinned as masters BUT if they are on the SAME ports/motherboard connector you should have boot drive pinned as master & the other drive pinned as slave (in the second case I would assume your CD/optical drive is on the other port and pinned as master of that port). You should have your boot drive as MASTER on the primary port.

Here is the setup, my sata is my boot drive, windows is on it. My old drive is ata, it is the only drive on that ribbon. Then my secondary ribbon is for my cd drives.

Remember, it worked fine until I removed windows from my old disk.

I noticed that the setting for this drive was defaulted at dma3 ultra33. I check the "let bios determine it" and it automatically set it to dma5 ultra100, my highest setting. Now it boots faster though not as fast as when just my sata is hooked up but I guess I will live with it for now.

I update nforce 4 drivers but removed their ide driver and just let the window's driver load. Now it boots pretty much normal although I think I need a new cable since it won't let me set it above ultra33, but I can fix that.

What is wrong with nvidia that they can't make a descent ide driver?
