Thank the LORD JESUS CHRIST there are so many dedicated law enforcement personnel to mercilessly enforce speed limits!

I've had idiot drivers who come to a complete stop at a merge onto a 55/65mph highway because they were afraid of the cars on the left. I wish those people would die in a fire, a very hot fire.

In some states there is no merge lane, like in west central PA, so you have to stop

I gunned it into a exit on ramp and almost died thinking i would easily merge in and drivers would allow that

Sounds like they were just playing with you.

I have never had to stop to get on a highway, ever. If you can't find a car length at 60-65mph that you can squeeze into you might want to consider letting someone else drive.

This is true in most states, butlike i said some are different, its fangerous assuming you always have right of way if you see a yield sign at the end of your merging lane

Some in NY are like that too. Merging into some spots on the hutch in non peak hours, you just close your eyes, gun it and hope for the best :awe:

My wife tried doing that with me in the passenger seat two weeks ago. I said "Are you freaking kidding me? Are you gonna merge into a 65mph highway at 40?!?!?!?" Shes like "Oh geez! No wonder it looked like everyone was going so fast and I couldn't get over."

Makes me wonder what she does when I'm not there, lol. My apologies for all those of you who have to drive with her on the road.

I honestly think this is how most people drive. White males included.

I always drive 5MPH over the speed limit when cops are around. It's hilarious the look on people's faces as I pass them and the cop.

It's not really about right of way. It's about being able to line your car up with an opening in traffic. If you go the same speed as the cars on the highway, you need 1-2 car lengths to squeeze in. If you are doing 40 while they are doing 65, now you need 10-15 car lengths and they still have to hit their brakes to not hit your ass. If you come to a complete stop, you now need a 1/4 mile to get your beater up to the speed limit.

I was once on the Jersey turnpike and was cruising at 95MPH just a few feet behind a State Trooper. Everyone was following the traffic flow and he didn't care.

Not all cops are dicks.
I agree. I was on the highway doing 75-80 in a 55 zone in the middle of the night. A cop came up fast on my left and I didn't realize he was a cop until he was almost even with me. When he got to even with me, he matched speeds and looked me over for a few seconds, which prompted me to slow down a little bit, like 65-70). After I did that, he took off. I had another instance where I was pulled over for doing 90+ in a 65 zone. Cop wrote me up for 75, probably because I didn't deny and just apologized for going so fast. There may be exceptions, but I find most cops are fairly reasonable if you show a little respect.

I do laugh at people who are speeding excessively, and then slam on their brakes when they see a police car on the side of the road. What's the point? By the time you see them, its already too late. You may as well just go by and hope that he lets you go. I also laugh at the people who slow down when they see a cop who has pulled someone else over. What's the point there? He's probably busy processing the ticket and not actively gunning anyone going by.

I don't understand why they do this. I've been on a bunch of these (I live in central PA). 9 times out of 10 I will just gun it right through the stop sign at the end of the ramp, assuming I have been on the ramp before and know what is coming up.

Point is that not every merge involves a lengthy run parallel to traffic. In that circumstance, I've never had to stop either. But, for example, there is a merge onto Route 3 in NJ near Bloomfield where the merging traffic has a tight turn flollowed by a sharp incline and no merge lane - you must immediately enter the traffic stream. Unless you're driving a Viper or a Corvette, you are not going to match the 70 MPH traffic for several seconds. There is another impossible merge onto Route 1 & 9 in NJ (Tonnelle Circle in Jersey City). Not every merge is created equal.

Where I live, the law requires you to merge left (or slow down if no merge is available) if a cop has someone pulled over on the shoulder. Of course, why someone would choose to obey that rule and not the speed limit is another story.

yes that pisses me off but not as much as the assholse who try to merge onto a 55MPH highway (slow) at 40MPH or less. Are you trying to commit suicide or just seriously fuck up the traffic flow?

People here will come to a dead stop on freeway on-ramps, it's pretty awesome.

I do this for the cop's safety. Especially if I'm in the right lane, if I can't move over I'll slow down to 5-10 MPH under the limit. Even if I'm in the middle lane I'll slow down a little.

Because the state's poor as hell and can't afford proper highway infrastructure. you see shit like this all over the place in PA.

This I understand and agree with. I'm generally referring to the people in the middle and left lanes who also feel the need to slam on their brakes.

If I am behind these asswipes, I get into the freeway before them and with them to my right, match their speed...

I don't get why you would even let a female drive if you are in the vehicle with her.
There are two things that females genetically can't do very well. That is drive and vote.

I am aware of those types of merges. I have driven in many different locations all across the US including NY/NJ and even L.A. Of course there are exceptions but I'm not complaining about people who stop to merge onto the L.I.E. I am complaining about people who try to merge into 65 mph traffic at 40 when there is a normal merge lane.

It happens a lot. I try to weave slowly and get past the cop. Usually people slow down so much teh CHP officer doesn't even have a chance to do 65. So he's stuck between 55-60 usually in the right lane, or if he tries to merge into the middle or whatever he might hav ea better chance, but if I try to use the 2 left lanes to kinda pass a bit, or to make sure then you can get into the front pack which usually starts pulling away around 70.

But I've been LIDARed many times doing 75 without an issue. The most recent one some guy was diagonally in front of me and he kinda covered the cop. However I think I saw a cop car on the emergency lane so I let go slowly. The guy in front of me on the left lane who covered the cop was doing 80. As I saw his brake lights come on so did mine, but I was still in a position where I covered the cop, so unless he dinged me for that flash where I saw him before he got blocked by the other car, chances are he LIDARed the other guy.

Pretty soon the car signals and merges in front of me. I'm down to under 70 now, but still above 65. I see the cop get into his car as we pass him. Who's he gonna nab? I knew he already made up his mind so I maintained 70. The car who merged in front of me still does 75 or so but passes a few cars and merges to the far right like he's gonna exit. Too late. Cop tails him and hits the lights. I laugh.

not sure how no one else has mentioned it, but this isn't nearly as annoying as people slamming on the breaks and driving crazy slow because they see a cop that has someone already pulled over on the side of the road...I can't stand that. talking about on the highway of course

This is a daily occurrence in Reno, and the main reason why I wont drive on the highway. People are constantly trying to merge while going 40mph.

It also doesn't help that every single on-ramp is also the offramp for another exit! I have to merge left into traffic while at the same time they are merging right to get into my lane to get off at the exit that is maybe 200yds from the on-ramp. It makes absolutely no sense and when half the people are going 40 and the other half are going 60 it makes for some interesting situations.

The cops in my city have no business driving vehicles at all, as reckless as they are. But if one is speeding down the highway, I'll pop in right behind them and go as fast as I like. Can't pull me over because I'm behind them!
