I have never had to stop to get on a highway, ever. If you can't find a car length at 60-65mph that you can squeeze into you might want to consider letting someone else drive.
+1

It must be pretty amusing... or annoying to be the cop that has to deal with this everyday.
I've had idiot drivers who come to a complete stop at a merge onto a 55/65mph highway because they were afraid of the cars on the left. I wish those people would die in a fire, a very hot fire.
Sounds like they were just playing with you.

In some states there is no merge lane, like in west central PA, so you have to stop
I gunned it into a exit on ramp and almost died thinking i would easily merge in and drivers would allow that
My wife tried doing that with me in the passenger seat two weeks ago. I said "Are you freaking kidding me? Are you gonna merge into a 65mph highway at 40?!?!?!?" Shes like "Oh geez! No wonder it looked like everyone was going so fast and I couldn't get over."
Makes me wonder what she does when I'm not there, lol. My apologies for all those of you who have to drive with her on the road.
It's not really about right of way. It's about being able to line your car up with an opening in traffic. If you go the same speed as the cars on the highway, you need 1-2 car lengths to squeeze in. If you are doing 40 while they are doing 65, now you need 10-15 car lengths and they still have to hit their brakes to not hit your ass. If you come to a complete stop, you now need a 1/4 mile to get your beater up to the speed limit.i
This is true in most states, butlike i said some are different, its fangerous assuming you always have right of way if you see a yield sign at the end of your merging lane
I agree. I was on the highway doing 75-80 in a 55 zone in the middle of the night. A cop came up fast on my left and I didn't realize he was a cop until he was almost even with me. When he got to even with me, he matched speeds and looked me over for a few seconds, which prompted me to slow down a little bit, like 65-70). After I did that, he took off. I had another instance where I was pulled over for doing 90+ in a 65 zone. Cop wrote me up for 75, probably because I didn't deny and just apologized for going so fast. There may be exceptions, but I find most cops are fairly reasonable if you show a little respect.I was once on the Jersey turnpike and was cruising at 95MPH just a few feet behind a State Trooper. Everyone was following the traffic flow and he didn't care.
Not all cops are dicks.
Everyone in Austin drives really slow everywhere, really frustrating

SNIP...
I do laugh at people who are speeding excessively, and then slam on their brakes when they see a police car on the side of the road. What's the point? By the time you see them, its already too late. You may as well just go by and hope that he lets you go. I also laugh at the people who slow down when they see a cop who has pulled someone else over. What's the point there? He's probably busy processing the ticket and not actively gunning anyone going by.
yes that pisses me off but not as much as the assholse who try to merge onto a 55MPH highway (slow) at 40MPH or less. Are you trying to commit suicide or just seriously fuck up the traffic flow?

I don't understand why they do this. I've been on a bunch of these (I live in central PA). 9 times out of 10 I will just gun it right through the stop sign at the end of the ramp, assuming I have been on the ramp before and know what is coming up.
This I understand and agree with. I'm generally referring to the people in the middle and left lanes who also feel the need to slam on their brakes.I do this for the cop's safety. Especially if I'm in the right lane, if I can't move over I'll slow down to 5-10 MPH under the limit. Even if I'm in the middle lane I'll slow down a little.

I don't get why you would even let a female drive if you are in the vehicle with her.My wife tried doing that with me in the passenger seat two weeks ago. I said "Are you freaking kidding me? Point is that not every merge involves a lengthy run parallel to traffic. In that circumstance, I've never had to stop either. But, for example, there is a merge onto Route 3 in NJ near Bloomfield where the merging traffic has a tight turn flollowed by a sharp incline and no merge lane - you must immediately enter the traffic stream. Unless you're driving a Viper or a Corvette, you are not going to match the 70 MPH traffic for several seconds. There is another impossible merge onto Route 1 & 9 in NJ (Tonnelle Circle in Jersey City). Not every merge is created equal.

The cops in my city have no business driving vehicles at all, as reckless as they are. But if one is speeding down the highway, I'll pop in right behind them and go as fast as I like. Can't pull me over because I'm behind them!
